Devastated to share the tragic passing of Summit Middle School Soccer alum, Dylan Sougstad, SCDMS ‘23. I kindly ask that you pray for his twin brother Parker, the Sougstad/Taylor families, and the extended communities of CHCA and Summit during this exceptionally difficult time.

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

The world lost a bright light today as Dylan Sougstad was laid to his eternal rest at the most well-attended and heartfelt service I’ve ever been to.

When I got into coaching, I naturally assumed that I’d take a loss or two on the field. I never in my wildest dreams thought that I’d be informed of a different kind of loss, especially not one by way of an early Saturday morning phone call while I’m out of town telling me about an accident.

I was blessed to get to know Dylan as his coach over several years, the most impactful of which occurred in his eighth grade year as his soccer and track coach. As I look back and reflect on the photos we have together, I’m reminded how blessed I am to have spent so much time at the soccer field and on the track with such a bright light in this world.

I find it extremely unfortunate that Dylan will never actually know the impact that he had on me as a young, inexperienced coach. I was just a kid myself at the time, but he looked at me like my opinions and feedback were the authority on soccer and, for some reason, implicitly trusted my guidance. All of that led to him being a leader on one of the most memorable soccer teams I’ve ever been a part of. Our Summit team lost a 1-0 game to Walnut in the city finals that year and him and I had a moment of consolation near the bench. I find solace in finding out at his service that that moment of reassuring confidence was so impactful to him, even as he had moved on to high school sports and became an impact athlete for CHCA.

If you’ve made it this far.. I have to say that I don’t know what compelled me to write this book. Maybe it’s because I just listened to a dozen people that loved him tell their beautiful stories and know I had my own.. Maybe it’s just simply my way of tying a bow on what has been a really crappy week for me and so many other people I care about. One thing I know for sure is that the world lost a bright light and we could all stand to be a little more like Dylan Sougstad.

Rest peacefully, Dylan. We will hold you in our hearts, memories, and conversations forever🙏🏼

15 players is all we 𝐡𝐚𝐝.. 15 players is all we 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝.

Down to just 15 players tonight due to conflicts and this group still brought home our ninth win of the season to keep their unbeaten record intact.

Shout out to our 7th graders for providing the bulk of the scoring tonight and our 8th graders for holding down the midfield and defense! Assists provided by Pearce and Steele.

Quick shout out to Summit Girls Soccer for battling a very talented Walnut Hills team to a close 2-1 loss yesterday with just 12 players. No, we don’t settle for moral victories over here, but this group showed that they can play with anyone!

Keep battling girls, more wins are right around the corner and coming soon!

Shout out to Michaela and Emma for stepping into the goal and for making some big time saves to keep us in the game while we were without a GK yesterday‼️
