We often think art is only a way to express ourselves. But what we tend to forget is that it’s also a way to serve others, as thoughtfully articulated by rapper, producer, and audio engineer @raychampionofficial in this clip from the @scenethroughus podcast, amongst a panel of artists and music creatives.

The songs that stay with us don’t just entertain us. They’re also a source of comfort. Or maybe even challenge us. Some even help us process life.

That’s the responsibility of an artist, whether you’re a producer, performer, musician, creative, engineer, etc.

Think about that on your next project. Create something that leaves people with more than they came with, because…

Sometimes the biggest upgrade isn’t your microphone. It’s someone you trust enough to tell you the truth.

Whether it’s an engineer, another artist, or someone in your music community, it always helps to get a second ear on your work before defaulting to more technical investments in gear, plugins, or software.

Every good conversation starts with someone willing to ask a better question.

At Scene Through Us, we bring together artists, producers, DJs, entrepreneurs, and creatives to explore the ideas, tensions, and experiences shaping music today. Not to find the “right” answer but to better understand the culture we’re building together.

Because the best conversations don’t end when the cameras stop rolling. They continue in studios, green rooms, writing sessions, and communities like ours.

If you’re passionate about music beyond the clout and algorithms, you’re invited to the table.

Perfection has stopped more artists than a lack of talent ever will. At some point, you’re not making the song better anymore. You’re just trying to make it perfect.

The irony? The songs people connect with most usually aren’t perfect. They’re honest.

Create it. Learn from it. Release it. Then make the next one better. Because that how artists grow no matter what creative field you’re in.

Let’s talk about the American Idol problem (for artists)…or any reality singing competition for that matter…

Covers build attention. Originals build identity.

And that transition isn’t as easy as people think.

If you perform a lot of cover songs…

There’s a difference between being liked in the moment for performing a cover song… and being remembered as an artist.

Covers can open the door but what are spectators walking away with? What can artists do to get the most from gained attention from the cover performance?

There are people in power positions in music who don’t actually love music.

They love what’s popular.

And that’s a dangerous difference.

When someone who has no musical identity tells you:
“You should sound like this.”
“Why don’t you make something like that?”
“Can you do what’s trending?”

That’s not guidance.
That’s insecurity disguised as strategy.

Not everybody knew who Kaytranada was before the co-signs.
Not everybody understood Pharrell Williams early on.
Not everybody liked Beyoncé at first.
Not everybody embraced Michael Jackson in every era.

Mass love is earned over time.
Cultural identity is built with the few before the many.

If you’re making progressive R&B in a room full of people who only recognize what charts… that doesn’t mean change your sound.

It might mean change your room.

Music is Art.
Art Still Matters.

We didn’t fall in love with music because it was perfect.

We fell in love because it was human.

The bends.
The cracks.
The notes that almost missed.

That’s where the feeling lived.

What do you think? is modern music missing something, or has the sound just evolved? by @scenethroughus
