Yesterday, alongside a group of determined women, we finished dismantling the exhibitions of the 4th edition of @bffmantova - a festival that celebrates the work and dedication of women photographers who, even today, are far less likely to be given the same space and visibility compared to their male colleagues. An event that carries a powerful emotional weight, precisely because it exists within a persistent imbalance of representation that still affects this field (and so many others!).

As you can see, I’m not interested in sharing technically perfect images. What matters to me is what remains, in my mind and in my heart, after such an intense month: the stories, the gazes, the strength, the resilience, the intelligence of so many women. Colleagues, friends, professionals.

Thanks BFF, to everyone who came to experience the exhibitions - even from afar. And a special thank you to the incredible women of La Papessa, who brought this festival to life in 2020 and, as soon as one edition ends, are already working on the next.

With infinite admiration and affection. ✨

Today, on International Women's Day, I'm proudly supporting the organisers of the amazing @bffmantova - a unique photography festival organised by the women led organisation "La Papessa" where female artists are equipped with a space to exhibit their projects, offering different perspectives to the viewers and creating public debates in a world where dialogue and exchanges seem to have come to an end. Female artists who are too often overshadowed by male colleagues; yes, indeed, even in 2026. And more often than you think.

I've taken these portraits to Sangeeta at her workplace, in Malta. A perfect example of women's stubbornness and survival skills in any kind of dynamics. Sangeeta was told she can't be a bartender, but she doesn't seem to care too much.

Despite the fog and the snow, the dances go on. The movement becomes unexpected freedom, and the faith turns into resistance. Every year, on February 2nd, the "Juta dei Femminielli" ascends Monte Partenio to the Sanctuary of Montevergine, defying the cold and prejudice. A pilgrimage rooted in tradition and devotion to the Black Madonna, also called "Mamma Schiavona", who, according to legend, saved two men condemned to death because of their love. A faith - perhaps religious, or maybe something else? - that is both refuge and hope for a better future.

Nonostante nebbia e neve, le danze non si fermano. Il movimento diventa libertà, la fede si fa resistenza. Ogni anno, il 2 febbraio, la Juta dei Femminielli risale il Monte Partenio fino al Santuario di Montevergine, sfidando il freddo e i pregiudizi. Un pellegrinaggio che affonda le radici nella tradizione e nella devozione alla Madonna Nera, anche denominata Mamma Schiavona, che secondo la leggenda salvò due uomini condannati a morte per il loro amore. Una fede - forse religiosa, o fors altro - che è sia rifugio che speranza per un futuro migliore.

Yesterday, for a few hours, Valletta stopped being just a showcase of restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops. The streets filled with voices, with footsteps, with those who chose to break the cycle of consumerism to reclaim women's rights over their own bodies.

Malta has the highest number of domestic violence cases in the EU (Eurostat) and, along with Poland, is the only EU country that completely bans abortion - except when the woman's life is at risk, and only with the approval of three specialists.

We also remembered Palestinian women, who continue to resist, alongside the rest of their people, under brutal occupation.

In a world that seems to reward individualism, exploitation, and racism, it was powerful to stand together and shout: "Every Woman, Every Day, Everywhere." Even for those who think that this is useless.

Ieri, per qualche ora, Valletta ha smesso di essere solo una vetrina di ristoranti, bar e souvenir. Le strade si sono riempite di voci, di passi, di chi ha scelto di interrompere il solito consumismo per rivendicare i diritti delle donne sul proprio corpo.

Malta ha il più alto numero di casi di violenza domestica in UE (Eurostat) ed è, insieme alla Polonia, l’unico Paese UE a vietare l’aborto in qualsiasi circostanza, se non quando la vita della donna è a rischio - e solo con il consenso di tre specialisti.

Non poteva mancare uno spazio per ricordare le donne palestinesi, che continuano a resistere, come tutto il loro popolo, sotto un’occupazione brutale.

In un mondo che sembra premiare l’individualismo, lo sfruttamento e il razzismo, è stato emozionante ritrovarsi a gridare insieme: "Every Woman, Every Day, Everywhere." Soprattutto pensando a chi non ritiene questi temi necessari per il dibattito pubblico.
