Happy Halloween. Here’s a scene from my third attempt at a full AI short. This one is a heavy metal/zombie apocalypse narrative music video. Rated R for strong language and graphic depictions of zombie violence. The full 5 min short is available on Youtube - link in bio.

As many of you know, I spent thirty years as a feature film editor, screenwriter, and college educator in Hollywood. This origin of the tale told in this short, comes from a time not that long after I wrote “Legion” (produced by Screengems in 2010). This was 2004 and I felt a good follow-up to my last script would be a zombie epic called “Dead”. Then in the same time period, “Shaun of the Dead” and Zack Snyder’s “Dawn of the Dead” were released and I gave up on my script, believing the whole zombie craze had played out (HA! Had I only known).

2026: I discovered making AI music – Suno. There was a bit of narration from “Dead” that I was always proud of, so I used it as the basis to create a goth heavy metal song with Suno. My interests then wandered into AI film creation. My first two shorts were comedic pieces in the style of stop motion animation. I decided for Halloween to create this short.

I have very strong feelings that AI is extremely dangerous and largely detrimental to the world, environment, and social structure. At the same time, I believe these are undeniably the new tools and a new palette of creativity. I don’t believe we benefit ourselves by ignoring AI's capabilities. I’m fascinated by what it can do and what it CAN’T do.

So, for this third short, I took on something intended to be photorealistic. It has the added challenges of lip sync as well as a need to fit the uneven content moderation that these platforms try to enforce.

For those of you who think that AI filmmaking is pressing a button, that’s not my experience. There’s about 300 hours of iterating, reiterating, editing prompts, discovering work flows, compositing, and editing in this short. AI engines can be astonishing and inspiring in one moment and fantastically dumb and frustrating in the next 20 moments.

Anyway - this is the problem solving I enjoy. Hope you enjoy the short.

After seeing my "Buzz and Esther Save Us All" AI short, a few people asked me to post the FULL "Gruello" short I made - my first attempt an an AI short. Here it is:

Here's my foray into the world of AI music and animation. I'm fascinated and terrified by the technology and largely took this project on as an exploration of what I could accomplish currently with readily accessible AI platforms.

The origin of the character Gruello actually dates back to an encounter, my friend, Mitchell Phillips, and I had in high school with what we deemed the world's ugliest dog, a lovable beast that elicited much pathos. In film school, my first cel animation project was the story of Gruello. The short film was completed with mixed results; my limited resources and lack of experience in cel animation weighed it down.

So when I started to tinker with Suno, creating AI music, Mitchell suggested a song about Gruello. I liked the results and that lead me to Vidmuse to create visuals for a music video/short film.

As any of you who've created with AI knows, it's magical and fantastically frustrating at the same time. I spent at least 100 hours on this project, prompting, iterating, and editing in Premiere Pro. This edit is built out of dozens of video iterations. Vidmuse can have moments of amazing brilliance, followed by a tendency toward total randomness and an inability to stay on model or comprehend relative scale. Its idea of lip sync is questionable and it too often refuses to listen to instructions either broad or precise. So it's a wrestling match, but it's capable of amazing things. It demands you go with the flow.

And so here I present to you - the tale of Gruello.

Here's my latest effort in AI music and animation. I'm fascinated and terrified by the technology and largely I'm taking these projects on as an exploration of what I can accomplish currently with readily accessible AI platforms.

I created this one to amuse my wife with the adventures of our beloved pups. This song is created with the help of Suno. The video is made with the use of Vidmuse. And the editing and comping is done on Adobe Premiere Pro.

As any of you who've created with AI know, it's magical and fantastically frustrating at the same time. I spent at dozens of hours on this project, going through hundreds of iterations of various shots, prompting, cursing, and editing in Premiere Pro. Vidmuse can have moments of amazing brilliance, followed by a tendency toward total randomness and an inability to stay on model or comprehend relative scale. ("The dogs are bipedal for the 500th time!!"). So it's a wrestling match, but it's capable of amazing things. It demands you go with the flow.

And so here I present to you - inspired by the cartoon intros of the 1970s - "Buzz and Esther Save Us All!"

I made a four minute film with AI just to see if I could make it happen. See the adventures of Gruello at link in bio.

Rest in peace, Ace Frehley. I was so lucky to get to know my hero during the time I was editing "Detroit Rock City". Like thousands of other people, I started playing guitar, inspired by Ace. Ace may not have been the most technical of the great guitar heroes but he played solos that you could hum, melodies that got trapped in your brain, and he had a certain tone that no one could match. His solo for “Let Me Go, Rock ‘n’ Roll” on the “Alive” album is the sound of a man putting every last ounce of his heart and energy into a song. Spending time with Ace, he was everything I'd ever heard: funny, spacey, kind, a handful, and uniquely Ace. He was the real rockstar in Kiss - the real deal - he lived that unpredictable life through its ups and downs. I think I'll go blast the 1978 solo album now. Thanks for the inspiration and the joy of your music, Ace. Bon voyage as you travel back to your home planet. Ack. by @schinkpeter
