"Where The Agatha Christie Cure excels is in an infectious love and admiration of Christie, which the reader will find impossible to resist. This is the heart of Rentzenbrink’s book: it’s not a detective novel, it’s a love story. Rentzenbrink is a hardcore fan and is well-placed to throw recommendations our way. The Agatha Christie Cure is at its sparkling best when Cathy nudges us in new directions. Yes, there’s the big novels everyone is familiar with. But what about the scathing wit of Cat Among the Pigeons? Have you tried Absent in the Spring? Rentzenbrink’s intimate knowledge of Christie allows her to dissect the novels in such a way that demands you take them more seriously."

"What is refreshing about Nights Out in the Kitchen is that it’s not just the big-ticket menus that get a mention. In ‘A High Street Favourite’, Jay Rayner writes about the high-street phenomenon that is Morley’s. Originally a London exclusive, but now spreading across the UK, Morley’s chicken wings are loved by restaurant critics, school children and all other discerning palettes. Rayner argues against categorising certain foods as “filthy”. They’re either tasty, or they’re not. Chicken wings are only dirty in that they’re a “three-napkin job”. Food without guilt is Rayner’s defining ethos."

"James McNeill Whistler found his muse in the rougher, grimier parts of London. In his tonal washes of colour, Whistler finds poetry in the mundane. Exhibition on Screen’s assembly of experts in their latest documentary carefully re-construct Whistler not as a bon vivant but an artist keenly interested in what he called the “science of colour.” In his layering on, and scraping away of paint, Whistler was exploring abstraction, years before the Impressionists. The unfinished qualities of his later work may not have impressed the critics (he took Ruskin to court, and won), but look at his palette, the exploration of line and shape and it’s pre-empting artists such as Rothko."

Further adventures in eBay: found this autobiography by Ingmar Bergman. I'm getting into more life writing at the moment, and this title really intrigued me. Has anyone read it? #books #autobiography #filmdirector🎬 #ingmarbergman #films by @scholar1977
