What is IB education?

IB stands for International Baccalaureate. It is an approach to education for students from ages 3 to 19.

In an IB classroom, learning is not just about listening to the teacher and remembering the correct answer. Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, do research, discuss different points of view, and connect classroom learning to the real world.

For example, students might study an environmental issue through science, geography, language, and other subjects. They learn to look at a topic from different angles and explain their own thinking.

Teachers still provide structure and guidance, but students take an active role in their learning. They also reflect on what they have learned, how they have improved, and what they can do next.

IB education supports academic learning, but it also helps students become curious, thoughtful, open-minded, responsible, and confident.

🌱 What is Montessori education?

Montessori is a way of teaching that helps children learn by doing things for themselves. Instead of asking every child to do the same activity at the same time, the teacher prepares different activities and allows children to choose what they want to work on.

Children learn by touching, moving, sorting, counting, and practicing. For example, they can trace sandpaper letters to learn sounds or use bead materials to understand ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. These hands-on activities make new ideas easier to see and understand.

The teacher first shows the child how to do an activity. Then, the child gets time to try it independently and repeat it when needed. The teacher watches, gives guidance, and helps when necessary.

Montessori education is not only about learning school subjects. It also helps children build confidence, improve focus, take responsibility, and enjoy learning.

You spot robotics on a school website and immediately picture your child joining.

Before that activity becomes a reason to enrol, check the details.

Is it available in their grade?
Can beginners join?
When does it run, and is there an extra fee?

The same check works for theatre, music and sports.

Ask for the current activity schedule for your child’s year group. Pick out what they could actually try, including anything that needs an audition or selection.

As you explore programmes on SchoolBase, note the ones that interest your child. Then confirm how they could take part.

Finding tuition that fits your budget is a good start.

Before you commit, ask for a full breakdown of what your family would pay in the first year.

Separate it into:
• Tuition
• Required fees and purchases
• Services your family would need, such as transportation or after-school care

Check which payments are one-time costs and which return every year. Ask whether a deposit counts towards tuition or is an additional charge.
Then compare schools using the same list.
Start with the published information on SchoolBase, and confirm the complete amount with each school.

You deserve to understand the commitment before making it.

When you are considering a new school, it is easy to focus on everything you hope will improve.

Before you build your shortlist, find out what your child wants to keep.

Try these three questions:
• “What would you miss if you changed schools?”
• “What would you be glad to leave behind?”
• “What would you want your next teacher to know about you?”

Listen for specifics.
A club they look forward to. A teacher who explains things patiently.
A friendship that makes lunchtime easier.

Note down what matters to them alongside your own priorities. Use both lists when comparing schools and planning visits.

Your child does not have to make the whole decision. Their experience should help shape it.

Explore schools on SchoolBase with those priorities in mind. Use the published information to narrow your options, then take your remaining questions to each school.

You have found a school you like. The hours between pickup and the end of your workday still need a plan.

Before you enrol, check:
• Is after-school care available for your child’s grade?
• Is there a confirmed place, or a separate application and waitlist?
• What time does care end, and what does it cost?

As you explore schools on SchoolBase, keep the care arrangements beside your shortlist. A school day needs to work all the way to pickup.

It is a lot of pressure to look at a five-year-old and wonder which school will get them into university.

You can take their future seriously without having every stage planned.

Start with what you know about your child now:
What do they enjoy learning?
Where do they need help?
What would you like their next school year to feel like?

Use those answers to guide your shortlist. Before enrolling, ask how the school supports students as their needs change.

Changing schools later can be difficult, so this decision deserves care. But you do not need certainty about who your child will be at eighteen to make a thoughtful choice today.

Explore schools on SchoolBase with your child’s current needs beside you. Start there.

Day 08 of our 3 School Profiles a Day series. Today: Bayview Glen, Hawthorn School for Girls and WillowWood School.

As you swipe, make these decisions:

2. Which programme fits?
Bayview Glen offers Advanced Placement, with 92 per cent of its AP students scoring 3 or higher in 2025, and belongs to Round Square. Hawthorn pairs every girl with a personal mentor and adds its own Hawthorn Diploma on top of the Ontario requirements. WillowWood runs a Pod System that lets a student work above or below their age level in a subject while staying with their peers.

3. What is the first-year budget?
Bayview Glen publishes 2026-27 tuition of $32,000 for Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 and $36,000 for Grades 6 to 12, plus a one-time $5,500 registration fee and a $1,000 annual facilities fee. Hawthorn publishes a range of $12,200 to $23,600 without attaching a school year or a grade breakdown, so ask admissions for the figure at your child's grade. WillowWood publishes $22,050 to $27,850 rising by division, also without a school year attached.

Save this post for your Don Mills and North York school search, then open the full SchoolBase profiles through the link in our bio.

Tell us in the comments: what matters more in the early years, a named mentor or a flexible pace?
