New publication 🌱 Our doctoral researcher @emilymurrrayy has published "Challenging anthropocentrism in human rights: Children's relational approach to the right to a healthy environment" in the Journal of Human Rights and the Environment. Human rights law has long treated people as separate from nature. A relational turn across many disciplines, long present in Indigenous and non-Western ways of thinking, puts interdependence, reciprocity and co-existence with the more-than-human world at the centre. Emily argues that children and young people are part of this shift, and that it shows in court. Reading statements from child/youth-involved climate cases in the YCJ Case Law Database, she finds young plaintiffs describing climate harm through relationships: emotional bonds with the natural world, the links between their own health and the health of their environment, attachment to place, and the time with family and friends that nature makes possible. Children's embodied, relational ways of knowing are often discounted because of their age, a form of testimonial injustice. By bringing that knowledge into legal proceedings, young climate advocates are reshaping what it means to be a rights-holder.
