✨Rest✨
Rest doesn’t equate to laziness. Rest doesn’t mean you’re not strong. Rest doesn’t always mean you need to sleep.

Rest can mean taking a few minutes to focus on your breath (physical rest), it can mean spending time alone to read, journal, or draw (mental rest), taking time in nature and away from social media (sensory rest), or spending time with someone who makes you feel safe, heard, and loved (emotional rest).

This pandemic is forcing our students and kids to live in a state of change and uncertainty, and it’s important that we consider the expectations we are putting on their developing brains during this time. This is not a normal dance or school season. This is a mental health marathon, and it requires a thoughtful approach.

Try incorporating different types of rest into your classes (or your home!): choose a breathing exercise to open or finish your class, ask your students how they are - and mean it, provide time for them to write in a creative journal, or dim the lights and let them dance freely to beautiful music. And remember to do this for yourself as well. We cannot pour from an empty cup 💕 by @science2studio

🩰 It’s that time of year again! The time where we re-learn how to make the perfect ballet bun, start finding stray bobby pins in every pocket, purse, and drawer, and get our tights, shoes, and dance clothes ready for the new season. Feeling organized and prepared for classes to begin can help to ease first day nervousness, and get those excited feelings flowing! Try organizing your clothes and accessories by dance style, or day of the week. Less thinking, more dancing! 💃 by @science2studio

Dance Science? What is that? Why does it matter?
As dancers our bodies are our tools, our instruments, and our livelihoods. The dance world is constantly evolving and demanding more from our bodies: more turns, higher jumps, extreme flexibility, and increasingly difficult tricks. Dance science is a growing field of study which bridges the gap between the worlds of art and science. Through rigorous academic research, and lived experience, we can apply this knowledge and train our dancers for performance enhancement, injury prevention, and improved mental and physical health. by @science2studio

Oh hello there! Let me introduce myself as your friendly neighbourhood dance scientist 😊

I am a dancer, choreographer, and educator. After performing and teaching for several years, I saw a need for advocacy and education for dancer health in my community. I travelled to London, UK, where I completed my Masters in Science (dance science) with a focus on dancers’ mental well-being, injury prevention, and performance enhancement.
