What would you tell Aria?

Honestly, I wish more adults were asking these questions, and I love that @sciencewitharia is.

There’s so much I wish I had known at her age that might have saved me decades of struggling with food and body image. My hope is that the next generation learns to question diet culture instead of learning to question their bodies.

And be sure to follow @sciencewitharia for the coolest science + culture bites. 🧪💗 by @sciencewitharia

🎙️ Aria Asks an Expert | Dr. Gregory Dodell, Central Park Endocrinology | NYC

I asked Dr. Gregory Dodell how teenagers can tell the difference between the normal changes that come with going back to school and when feeling tired, moody, or having changes in sleep and energy might be worth paying closer attention to.

And he answered! 😊

Dr. Dodell is an endocrinologist at Central Park Endocrinology, a private medical practice in New York specializing in endocrinology, diabetes, and whole-person wellness.

In his answer, he explains how changes in our routines can affect our circadian rhythm, sleep, appetite, stress, and hormones, and why sleep, nourishment, movement, and managing stress matter so much.

I’m so grateful to Dr. Dodell, @everything_endocrine for taking the time to answer my question and be part of Aria Asks an Expert. I learned a lot! 🧠

Dr. Jay Jagannathan Answers My Question 🧠💙

Dr. Jay Jagannathan, MD, FAANS, is a board certified neurosurgeon and President of the Jagannathan Neurosurgery Institute in Michigan. He specializes in brain and spine surgery, including minimally invasive and complex spinal procedures.

A few days ago, I asked Dr. Jay @jagannathanneurosurgery how neurosurgeons know they are exactly where they need to be during surgery and how they protect healthy brain tissue in real time.

His answer showed me how many layers of safety and precision are involved.

Before surgery, surgeons carefully review imaging such as MRI scans to understand the anatomy and look for anything unusual.

During surgery, they can use intraoperative nerve monitoring to watch the signals between the brain and the nerves. If those signals change, it can alert the surgical team that something may need attention.

They also use navigation during surgery to help confirm exactly where they are.

What stayed with me most is that all of these steps work together for one reason: keeping patients safe.

Dr. Jay, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question and share your knowledge with me. Hearing directly from an expert like you makes learning feel even more meaningful. 🧠✨

The 9 Dots Brain Challenge! ⚫🧩

Nine dots. Four straight lines. One very confused brain. 😂

Okay, brain challenge. No Google, no AI. Just your brain and your imagination. 🧠

Your mission? Connect all 9 dots using ONLY 4 straight lines, without lifting your pen!

Sounds ridiculously easy, right?

Well, your brain might disagree. 😂

Here’s the tricky part. Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn’t the puzzle itself. It’s the way we THINK about it! 🤯

Can you solve it, or are these nine innocent little dots about to ruin your confidence? 😂

Did you solve it, or did those nine dots win? Tell me in the comments! 👇🧠

🎙️ Aria Asks an Expert | Dr. Eric M. Ascher, DO 🩺🧠

Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician | Northwell Health Physician Partners | Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City

Today, I’m excited to introduce Dr. Eric Ascher, a New York City family medicine physician specializing in primary care, preventive medicine, and helping patients maintain their health at every stage of life.

Dr. Ascher practices with Northwell Health Physician Partners in Manhattan and is affiliated with Lenox Hill Hospital.

For this episode of Aria Asks an Expert, I wanted to explore something especially important to teenagers.

What is one thing teenagers often overlook about their health that could make a big difference in their lives as adults?

And why is it so important to start building healthy habits while we’re still young?

Because the choices we make today may have a lasting impact on our health tomorrow. 🧬💙

A special thank you to Dr. Ascher @dr.eric_ascher for sharing his time and medical expertise and helping young people become more curious about their health!

Can rain actually clean the air? 🌧️🏙️

Yes, but there’s a catch. Rain can carry some gases and tiny particles from the atmosphere down to Earth through a process called wet deposition.

But removing pollution from the air doesn’t mean it disappears. 🧪

Pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides can react in the atmosphere to form acids that fall with rain, affecting lakes, soil, forests, and even buildings.

Cleaner air above can come with consequences below. What rain brings down depends on what was up there to begin with. 🌍

One Million Hairs in Just One Square Inch? 🦦🌊

Did you know sea otters can have up to one million hairs in just one square inch of fur? 🤯

That makes their fur the densest of any living mammal!

Unlike whales and seals, sea otters don’t rely on a thick layer of blubber to stay warm.

Instead, their incredibly dense fur traps a layer of air close to their skin, helping insulate them from the cold ocean water.

And here’s something even more fascinating!

Sea otters spend hours grooming their fur because keeping it clean and fluffy helps maintain that insulating layer of air.

Without properly maintained fur, they can lose body heat dangerously fast.

Tiny hairs. Huge job. 🦦💙

What Happens Inside the Brain with Alzheimer’s Disease? 🧠🔬

Did you know Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia?

Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that gradually damages neurons and the connections between them.

Memory problems are often among the earliest symptoms, but as the disease progresses, it can also affect language, reasoning, judgment, behavior, and the ability to carry out everyday activities.

Two important changes scientists observe in the brain are:

🧬 Amyloid plaques: Abnormal buildups of beta amyloid protein between nerve cells.

🔬 Tau tangles: Abnormal accumulations of tau protein inside nerve cells.

Over time, neurons and their connections are lost, and affected regions of the brain can begin to shrink.

But Alzheimer’s is more complex than plaques and tangles alone. Scientists continue to investigate how genetics, inflammation, aging, and other biological processes contribute to the disease.

Understanding these changes is essential for developing better treatments and exploring ways to prevent or delay Alzheimer’s disease.

A special thank you to the Science with Aria follower and psychology student @dhanu__chetu who suggested this important topic and encouraged me to learn more about it.

More Than a Garden: Science at the New York Botanical Garden 🌿🔬

Did you know that The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is much more than a place to admire beautiful plants and flowers?

Located in the Bronx, New York City, it’s also a major center for botanical research, conservation, and scientific discovery. 🌎🌱

Behind the beautiful landscapes, scientists study plant genetics, biodiversity, fungi, and the effects of climate change on ecosystems.

Researchers also use modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, to help analyze and understand the incredible diversity of plant life.

So while visitors explore the gardens, scientists are working to understand, document, and protect the natural world.

A beautiful reminder that science isn’t always happening in a laboratory. Sometimes it’s happening right in the middle of a garden! 🌳🧬

Why Is Space Black If the Sun Is Shining? 🌌☀️

If the Sun is shining in space, why isn’t the entire universe bright?

On Earth, sunlight interacts with molecules in our atmosphere, scattering light in different directions. Blue light scatters more strongly than red light, which is why our daytime sky looks blue. 🌍💙

But space is different.

Most of space is nearly empty, with very little matter to scatter sunlight toward our eyes.

That means even when the Sun is shining brightly, the sky around an astronaut can appear completely black.

So space isn’t dark because sunlight isn’t there. It’s dark because there’s almost nothing to scatter that light toward us! 🚀✨
