👻🎈 MOANING MYRTLE’S GHOSTLY BALLOON! 🎈👻 Myrtle will be making a ghostly appearance in my Science of Hogwarts shows through out November—and here’s a little Halloween science for families to try together! Can you make a balloon howl without using your voice? 🧙‍♀️ You’ll need: 🎈 A good-quality white balloon 🖊️ Permanent markers 🔩 One small hex nut with no sharp edges or burrs 🎈 A balloon pump An adult should: 1. Pop the hex nut inside the uninflated balloon. 2. Inflate the balloon using a pump—don’t overinflate—then tie it securely. The children can: 3. Decorate it with a ghostly face - a template for Moaning Myrtle is attached 4. Hold the balloon firmly in one hand around it’s neck - give it a shake and then gently move it in a circular motion until the nut rolls around inside. Listen carefully… can you hear Myrtle’s spooky moan? 👂👻 🔬 THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SPOOKINESS As the hex nut rolls around inside the balloon, its six edges give the stretched rubber a rapid series of little bumps, making it vibrate and produce sound. The faster the nut rolls, the more bumps it makes each second—and the higher Myrtle’s ghostly moan becomes! Listen as it slows down… can you hear the pitch fall? 🎶 ⚠️ This is an adult-led demonstration. Keep the balloon away from faces and leave plenty of space around you. Stop if the children get over excited. Hex nuts, uninflated balloons and broken balloon pieces are choking hazards—keep them away from young children and collect any burst pieces and the nut immediately. Have a go and tell me how haunting your balloon sounds! 🧙‍♀️✨ #ScientificSue #Science2Life #HalloweenScience #ScienceOfHogwarts #FamilyScience #HalloweenActivities Science Week Ireland Galway Science & Technology Festival Rothe House & Garden by @scientificsue_

🤣 Well, I think I’m going to have to buy myself a pair of pink Doc Martens now! 💗🥾 It all started when my brother Jeff sent me a hilarious AI-generated image of himself as a giant cowboy. Naturally, I couldn’t resist having a go! And then this happened… 😂 But the more I look at this picture, the more it makes me smile for a completely different reason. Somehow, AI has captured so much of what I’ve spent my life building. The science. The creativity. The shows. The schools. The festivals. The experiments. The laughter. And, of course, the wonderful children whose curiosity makes every single day worthwhile. When I founded Science2Life back in 2005, I had a passion for science, a head full of ideas and a belief that learning should be an adventure. Twenty one years later, I’m still doing what I love. Still experimenting. Still learning. Still making a mess. And still getting ridiculously excited when an experiment works! 🧪 I may never be quite as tall as this version of Scientific Sue, but I’ve always believed that you don’t have to be big to make a big difference. And if I’ve inspired even one child to look at the world differently, to ask another question or to believe that science is for them, then every step of this extraordinary journey has been worth it. Sparks of imagination are at the heart of creativity! ✨ Now… where can I buy those pink boots? 🤣💗 #ScientificSue #Science2Life #WomenInSTEM #ScienceEducation #NeverStopLearning by @scientificsue_
Well… the planets didn’t show up, but the wildlife did! 🌅😂 My very early morning planet hunt in Cloughey is officially over. I was hoping for quite a planetary line-up this morning — Mercury, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn were all potentially visible to the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune were also above the horizon but would have needed binoculars or a telescope to find. Unfortunately, the Northern Irish clouds had other plans! ☁️😂 So… six planets above the horizon and I managed to see precisely none of them! 🤣 But as the sky began to brighten over the Irish Sea, I was joined by the unmistakable calls of oystercatchers and curlews along the shore. No planets, but a beautiful dawn, the sound of the sea and some lovely early-morning wildlife — definitely not a wasted trip. Now I’m off back to bed! 😴 But there’s still a rather exciting day — and night — ahead… 🌞🌑 The partial solar eclipse this evening — fingers crossed for a clear western sky! ☄️✨ The Perseid meteor shower tonight — and another chance to look for them tomorrow night too. Come on Northern Irish weather — clear skies please! 🤞🤞🤞 #Cloughey #ArdsPeninsula #EclipseDay #SolarEclipse2026 #Perseids #PerseidMeteorShower #PlanetWatching #Oystercatcher #Curlew #NorthernIreland #LookUp #ScientificSue by @scientificsue_
A beautiful start to Eclipse Day 🌅✨ Up before dawn this morning in Cloughey, hoping to catch Mercury and Jupiter appearing over the Irish Sea. The clouds had other ideas! ☁️😂 No planets for us this time — but what a gorgeous sunrise we got instead. Sometimes the sky doesn’t give you what you went looking for, but puts on a completely different show. And there’s still plenty to look forward to today… 🌞🌑 The partial solar eclipse takes place this evening, with more than 90% of the Sun covered from here in Northern Ireland at maximum eclipse. So now we’re keeping everything crossed for those clouds to disappear and give us a clear western sky this evening! 🤞🤞🤞 Come on Northern Irish weather — just this once, cooperate! 😂 #EclipseDay #SolarEclipse2026 #Cloughey #ArdsPeninsula #NorthernIreland #LookUp #Astronomy #ScienceEverywhere #ScientificSue@ by @scientificsue_
LOOK UP, IRELAND! 🌌 This August, the skies above Ireland and Northern Ireland are putting on one of the greatest astronomical shows we’ve seen in years—and I don’t want anyone to miss it. Over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing four FREE, family-friendly astronomy posters, each helping you discover a different event that you can experience from your own garden, local park or favourite stargazing spot. ⭐ Today I’m delighted to share Poster 1 – Ireland’s Great Solar Eclipse! On Wednesday 12 August, the Moon will pass in front of the Sun, creating a spectacular partial solar eclipse across the whole island of Ireland. For many of us, it will be the most impressive solar eclipse we’ve ever seen. ☀️ Get ready now! There is still time to prepare, so why not make this a family science adventure? You have two safe ways to enjoy the eclipse: 🕶️ Buy certified eclipse glasses that comply with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing the Sun. 📦 Or make your own Box Pinhole Projector! This is one of my favourite family science activities because it lets you watch the eclipse safely while learning the science behind how light travels. NASA has an excellent step-by-step guide here: https://science.nasa.gov/resource/how-to-make-a-box-pinhole-projector-video/ It only takes a few simple household materials and is a brilliant activity to make with children before eclipse day. ⚠️ Important: Never look directly at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses or an approved solar viewer. Looking at the partially eclipsed Sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage. ⸻ 🌠 Coming soon… ☄️ Poster 2 – Meteor Hunters! The Perseid Meteor Shower 🪐 Poster 3 – Find the Planets Above Ireland 🌕 Poster 4 – Why Does the Moon Turn Dark? ⸻ 💙 If you enjoy this poster, please share it. My hope is that thousands of families, schools and community groups across Ireland and Northern Ireland will step outside together this August, look up, and experience the wonder of our universe. After all, science isn’t just something we learn in books… sometimes it happens right above our heads. Scientific Sue 🔬✨ by @scientificsue_
🥬 Ever noticed that red cabbage isn’t actually red? Oooo… have I just planted a question in your mind? Scientists are curious people. They notice things and ask questions. So here’s today’s question: Why do we call it red cabbage when it looks purple? Have you ever questioned it before? The reason we call it red goes back hundreds of years to when it was commonly pickled in vinegar. The acid turned the cabbage a beautiful bright red colour — and the name stuck. This week we’re making our own rainbow chemical indicator from red cabbage juice. Scroll through the poster and then have a go yourself! Follow me if you want to catch the next 8 weeks of simple STEM activities for children, parents and grandparents. 🔬✨ #SummerSTEM #ScientificSue #Science2Life #STEMatHome #KitchenScience #RedCabbageIndicator #FamilyScience #GrandparentsAndGrandkids #ScienceFun by @scientificsue_
