Who here enjoys food poisoning? 🤢 Not us! This World Food Day get to know Associate Professor Senaka Ranadheera, a food scientist researching how prebiotics and probiotics can help fight off food-borne illnesses and diseases.

"We have strong evidence that probiotics are part of us. They interact with the whole body. If you have a healthy gut microbiome, you will be healthy and happy," Associate Professor Ranadheera said.

Forest expansion and thickening after British colonisation has created landscapes more prone to burning, amplifying the influence of climate change and propelling Australia’s bushfire crisis, a new study has found.

UniMelb researchers, including Professor Michael-Shawn Fletcher, along with the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC), reconstructed the past 1000 years of vegetation, fire and erosion in Croajingolong National Park in East Gippsland.

They found that while Country thrived under the care of Gunaikurnai people for thousands of years, colonisation brought the end of that care and sparked a chain of events ultimately leading to the bushfire crisis we have today. Tap the link in our bio to learn more 🔗 by @scimelb

Did you feel the earthquake in Melbourne last weekend? 🛘 Our Earthquake Research Group got up on Saturday to set up seismometers and measure the aftershocks. “After the earthquake early on Saturday morning, our team was in the office preparing equipment by about 8 am and on the road by 10 am,” says research fellow Dan Sandiford.

Professor Mark Quigley says the seismometers have measured about 150 aftershocks since the earthquake, and are predicted to measure even more after a month of monitoring. This information will help the team map the fault system in the area - the depth, geometry, whether activity jumps between different faults or migrates through time, and whether the earthquakes extend from the older Paleozoic basement into the younger rocks exposed at the surface.

The Earthquake Research team also originally set up the seismic network in Gippsland back in 2012, prompted by the 2009 Korumburra earthquakes. One seismometer belongs to UniMelb and other belongs to the Seismology Research Centre. “Having two seismometers that close to an earthquake is quite unusual,” Dan says. “It means we captured the sequence from essentially the moment the mainshock occurred.”

One advantage we have is that Gippsland is an active earthquake and neotectonic region relatively close to Melbourne. That obviously comes with risks, but scientifically it means we can respond quickly when something happens.”

We’ll keep you updated on what the research group finds out!

Thanks research fellow Israporn Sethanant for producing this video.

It's snake sssssssseason! Or is it? 🐍 Our latest map of the month explores snake sightings in Melbourne and when you are more likely to see a snake. But, as @DrKylieSoanes says, snakes live among us all year round. There’s no need to be sssssscared - snake bites are not as common as you think, and they’re more likely to eat their own prey than a human.

It’s time to put the nature back into nature strips 🌸 Research fellow Dr Philippa Bell led a project in Merri-bek council to transform drab nature strips with flowers and plants. Not only has it brought some colour and whimsy to the street of Merri-bek, but it’s attracted more pollinator insect visitors, who are crucial for growing food and an important part of our ecosystem. 🔗 Tap the link in bio to learn more
