🎧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐎𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 : Lost in Kyiv

“𝐼’𝑚 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒”.

A useful answer when the actual answer would take about three hours.

Released via Pelagic Records, Lost in Kyiv’s 'We’re All Going To Be Fine' starts somewhere around there. It’s heavier than you might expect, with more groove, more electronics, and no great hurry to resolve the uncomfortable bits.

We spent some time with the album and wrote about what happens when you stop trying to explain a feeling and let the music do its thing.

🌘 𝟐𝟓 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐚.

In 2001, Cult of Luna’s self-titled debut arrived with eight tracks, a whole lot of weight, and absolutely no interest in getting to the point quickly. “Sleep” alone takes fourteen glorious minutes.

It’s rawer and rougher than the records that followed, but you can already hear the band working with space, tension and sheer volume in a way that would become unmistakably theirs.

A quarter of a century later, this is Saturday night fever "𝑆𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝐴/𝑉 𝑠𝑡𝑦𝑙𝑒": stream the album, turn it up as loud as you can, and let “Hollow” shake the room.

Well, this is going straight onto the reading pile. Probably the “disappearing for an entire weekend” part of it.

Decibel Books has announced 'Deconstructing Towers: The Story of Hydra Head Records' - and, honestly, if any label deserves more than 500 pages devoted to its beautiful, complicated history, Hydra Head Industries does.

Founded by Aaron Turner in the mid-’90s and rooted in Boston’s metal and hardcore scenes, @hydraheadrecords (Botch, Discordance Axis, Helms Alee, Isis, KNUT, Old Man Gloom, ZOZOBRA...) was never simply a label that released heavy music. It created its own strange ecosystem: uncompromising records, adventurous artists, fearless artwork and physical editions that made you want to own the thing before you’d even heard it.

Over nearly two decades, the label helped push underground music into much weirder and more interesting places—sometimes through careful artistic vision, sometimes through friendship and collaboration, and occasionally, by Turner’s own admission, through something resembling glorious chaos.

Written by longtime music journalist and @greatfallsnoise bassist Shane Mehling, 'Deconstructing Towers' tells that story through the people who actually lived it: artists, former bandmates, employees and others who helped build one of extreme music’s most singular catalogues.

The book includes more than 500 pages, a 32-page colour section, rare and previously unpublished images, and new cover artwork by Turner.

There’s also an excerpt about the early-2000s major-label bidding war surrounding Cave In after 'Jupiter' - because apparently there was a moment when major labels heard 'Jupiter' and collectively thought: “𝑌𝑒𝑠, 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑚𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑”. 😏

A fascinating piece of underground music history - and, judging by the size of it, possibly a very effective doorstop too.

French trio @sycomore80 are back with “Chat-Loup”, the first single and official music video from their forthcoming fifth album, 'Dégradé', out in November in co-production with Araki Records.

Ten years and four albums into their story, the band have changed the line-up, switched to French-language vocals and returned to shorter, more immediate songwriting.

What hasn’t changed? Their ability to combine viscous sludge, dark post-hardcore and abrasive noise rock into something heavy enough to alter the local gravitational field.

Here’s a short extract from “Chat-Loup”. Turn the volume up. Your neighbours have probably had enough peace and quiet anyway.

⚫ 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 : Converge

All right, we’re 2 days late. In our defence, it took us 25 years to recover...

On September 4, 2001, @converge released 'Jane Doe' - 45 minutes of emotional wreckage, metallic hardcore, controlled chaos and the kind of riffs that sound as if they were assembled during a building collapse.

From the opening detonation of “Concubine” to the slow-burning devastation of the title track, 'Jane Doe' didn’t simply push hardcore forward. It tore up the floor underneath it - bringing together punk urgency, metal precision, dissonance, vulnerability and absolute fucking panic in a way countless bands have chased ever since.

And then there’s that Jacob Bannon artwork: one face, a million shirts, tattoos and patch-covered jackets.

25 years later, 'Jane Doe' is a classic.
Thankfully, it still doesn’t behave like one.

Happy 25th anniversary to a record that changed heavy music - and still sounds like it’s trying to destroy it.
