Some Chardonnays impress with oak. This one wins you over with freshness.Loré Vigna Loré Chardonnay Trentino DOC • Cantina di Riva • 2023 Loré comes from a southeast facing vineyard above Lake Garda at around 250 metres of elevation. The wine is made primarily from Chardonnay with a small proportion of Manzoni Bianco, a local crossing that adds freshness and aromatic lift. After a short skin contact, fermentation begins in stainless steel before finishing in French oak barriques and tonneaux. The wine then ages on its lees with regular bâtonnage, and part of the blend undergoes malolactic fermentation, giving it both texture and complexity.Beautiful deep golden colour in the glass. The nose is spectacular, with green apple, pear, white flowers, seashell and mineral notes.Full bodied, round and beautifully smooth, yet wonderfully crisp. The creamy texture never overshadows the wine’s freshness, while the vibrant acidity carries the fruit and mineral character effortlessly across the palate. The finish is long, elegant and packed with freshness.The cool influence of nearby Lake Garda gives this wine real energy. Some young Burgundies ask for patience. This one is already a pleasure to drink.Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey • Maison Pierre Brisset • 2022 Pierre Brisset came to wine after a successful career outside the industry in IT, driven by a passion for Burgundy’s great terroirs. Rather than building a large domaine, he focuses on a small range of Premier and Grand Cru wines, produced in limited quantities with an emphasis on expressing each vineyard. Aux Thorey lies at the northern end of Nuits Saint Georges, close to Vosne Romanée, on clay-limestone soils. The 45 year old vines are harvested by hand, completely destemmed and aged for 14 months in French oak, half of it new, giving the wine polish without overwhelming the fruit.Lovely ruby in the glass. The nose is charming and fruit driven, with cassis, red cherries and red berries wrapped in a sweet, inviting aroma.Medium bodied, with lively acidity and round, gentle tannins. The fruit is still firmly in the lead, making the wine feel delicate, elegant and wonderfully approachable despite its complexity. The finish is fresh, fruity and lingering.A beautiful Burgundy that is as inviting as it is refined. Fourteen years old, and this Corton Charlemagne still feels remarkably young.Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru • Domaine Rapet Père & Fils • 2014 Domaine Rapet has deep roots in Pernand Vergelesses and has remained in the same family since 1765. For this wine, whole Chardonnay grapes are gently pressed, the juice settles at low temperature, then ferments in barrel with around 30% new oak. Ageing continues on the lees with bâtonnage before bottling after twelve months.Beautiful golden colour in the glass. The nose is complex and surprisingly youthful, with pear, grapefruit, butter, limestone, almond and mineral notes.Full bodied, rich and fresh, with creamy texture running alongside a clear mineral line. Second wines don’t always feel secondary.Mondot • Château Troplong Mondot • Saint-Émilion Grand Cru • 2021 What a treat when lightly chilled on warm summer day🍷Deep ruby in the glass. The nose is bright and expressive, with red berries, blackcurrant and cassis taking the lead.Medium bodied and fruit driven, with smooth medium tannins and lively acidity that keeps everything fresh. This 2009 Mazoyères-Chambertin has the depth of a big wine, but none of the heaviness.Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru • Domaine Taupenot-Merme • 2009 🍷Deep, dark ruby with brown reflections at the rim. The nose is complex and beautifully mature, opening with cherry and cassis before moving into earth, leather and dried tea leaves.Full bodied, rich and rounded, with real depth through the palate. The tannins are smooth and fully integrated, while the acidity brings freshness and shape to all that generosity.The finish is long, composed and persistent. This 2020 Bougros is already showing a very easy kind of charm.Chablis Grand Cru Bougros • Domaine Gueguen • 2020 Beautiful golden colour in the glass. The nose is inviting, with mineral notes, apple, pear and grapefruit, followed by a gentle touch of cream.Medium to full-bodied, rich and complex, with pleasant acidity keeping the wine fresh and composed. The fruit and creamy texture sit comfortably together, leading into a long, clean finish.Generous Chablis, handled with a light touch. 2014 Bordeaux is for people who like their wine classic, not inflated.Château Cantemerle Haut-Médoc Grand Cru Classé 2014 🍷2014 wasn’t a blockbuster vintage, and that’s exactly the point. After a tricky summer, September saved the year, giving wines with freshness, structure, and that proper old-school Bordeaux feel.Cantemerle shows it beautifully. A blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, with about 13% alcohol, it feels balanced, elegant, and very much alive. The nose is classic Médoc: blackcurrant, black cherry, plums, earth, coffee, tobacco, with a touch of oak and spice.On the palate, full-bodied and dry, with firm but well-integrated tannins. Brunello doesn’t always need to be a 30-year commitment.CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 2018 🍷The 2018 vintage in Montalcino produced wines with a little less muscle and a little more charm. CastelGiocondo wears that style well.Deep ruby in the glass. The nose opens with notes of sour cherry, red cherry, plum, dried herbs, tobacco and a touch of spice. Give it a few minutes and it becomes more expressive.On the palate, it feels approachable , the tannins are there, but they’re already starting to settle in. Fresh acidity keeps everything moving, and the fruit stays front and center.This isn’t a Brunello built around power. This is why I keep a few Rieslings hidden in the cellar.K.H. Schneider Marbach Riesling Nahe 2016 🥂This one is exactly where it should be. Around 10 years in, and everything just clicks.Golden in the glass. The nose is open and inviting with notes of grapefruit, citrus, white flowers, minerals, and that gentle petrol note that reminds you Riesling ages like few whites can.On the palate, it’s fresh, crisp, and alive, with that classic Riesling energy but now more settled and flowing. This is Margaux doing what Margaux does best, charm ! .Château Ferrière Margaux Grand Cru Classé 2008 🍷What a beautiful treat. This is a fantastic example of Margaux elegance fully mature in my book, but still drinking beautifully.Ruby in the glass, with lovely brown rims. The nose is elegant, sexy, and tempting: blackcurrant, cassis, licorice, a light touch of acetone, and earth.Medium-bodied, round, balanced, and very graceful. White Burgundy doesn’t have to hurt your wallet.Blason de Bourgogne Chardonnay Bourgogne AOC 2023 “Blason de Bourgogne” brings together more than 200 winegrower families from across Burgundy, from the Côte-d’Or down to the Mâconnais. This one is a white Burgundy Chardonnay made to drink easily.Picked this up in Switzerland for around 6 euros on sale, which honestly is a spectacular value.In the glass a shiny golden color. The nose is fresh and easy with notes of lime, grapefruit, a touch of exotic fruit.Medium-bodied, pleasant, with enough acidity to keep things lively and a clean fresh finish.If you’ve never tried white Burgundy and don’t want to spend big money, this is a very good place to start.My score: 88 | Drink to 2027 🥂Enjoyed in a Riedel veloce Riesling rather than Chardonnay … as some time I use the Riesling version for fresh whites and the Chardonnay for more complex ones, but both will work here@maxiriedel @riedel_official #wineeducation #wineglasses #winetasting #burgundywine #winereview by @scorewine
