El Djazaïr: L’autre soleil, Ministère de l’Information et de la Culture, 1978

Post-independence Algeria, through the faces and hands of the stewards of her land

~
“Eighteen million Algerians, at every moment, make the entire country vibrate; the gestures of the peasant, the worker, the soldier, the student shake and unsettle what had seemed immutable and definitive, in order to build, on new foundations, a system better suited to the needs of all. Each moment thus becomes an occasion to draw from the sources of History and change the course of time. Here, everything is movement, transformation, becoming: every spectacle is re-creation, every birth active, every creation collective.” by @scorpionicsun

Attica: Then and Now - Still Fighting Back
Attica Committee to Free Dacajeweiah, c. 1977

Written and produced by members of the Attica Committee to Free Dacajeweiah, with support from Youth Against War and Fascism / Workers World Party, Liberation News Service, and allied organizing networks.

Produced in the wake of the uprising, this document holds Attica as an open wound and a site of ongoing struggle- it is a record of resistance, and of the work that continued after the state tried to silence it.

Scorpionic Sun, poems from 1969, written in exile
Mohammed Khaïr-Eddine
Nightboat Books, 2020 (tr. Conor Bracken)

This project’s namesake ~ I’m holding close the legacy that Mohammed Khaïr-Eddine and his peers Abdellatif Laâbi and Mostafa Nissabouri (will share their writing soon), who started Souffles, left behind, along with the dozens of incredible contributors from the global majority. The first issue of Souffles was published in Rabat in March 1966, and I’m grateful to be able to invoke it, even in a small way, sixty years later. I feel deeply indebted to this lineage of Moroccan revolutionary thinkers who, decades later, still offer a compass for moving through ongoing colonial violence and its psychic afterlives.

The poems in Scorpionic Sun feel like incantation and a time capsule of rage, written with palpable clarity.

“Description of a Flag” was written for Mehdi Ben Barka, head of the National Union of Popular Forces (UNFP), a vocal opponent of French colonial imperialism and the Moroccan monarchy under King Hassan II - abducted and murdered in exile in Paris in 1965.

I can make PDFs of both the English and French versions of the poems. I have one copy available, if you feel a connection to this history& lineage, I’d love to gift you a copy. by @scorpionicsun
