✏️ 🗒️ I met Jason Pearson @jsin70 at Chicago Comic-Con back in 1994 in Artist Alley where we chopped it up about hip hop & college football. I didn’t get to the Con every year, but I always swung by his table when I did.

I later moved to San Diego and went to SDCC for the first time in the summer of 2004. Each year, I’d hand out mixtapes to artists & creators that I knew were hip hop heads. Just showing love and being a fan of their work. Jason had done a cover for Robin and I flipped the artwork for one of my mixtapes and thankfully he was cool with it lol. He said my tapes stayed in heavy rotation when he was drawing. It was the highest of compliments.

At SDCC 2008, we started pitching ideas for a Body Bags soundtrack. I already had ideas marinating and he suggested a few artists to include. Done. I left SDCC feeling completely inspired, energized & ready to dive in.

Like most of my projects, it became more and more ambitious lol. I didn’t care. The album needed to be what it would be and that was that. And I still love how it turned out.

Body Bags: The Soundtrack was released the following year as a SDCC 2009 exclusive. That part is a much longer story for another time perhaps…

SDCC was the last time that I saw J in person. He was a complicated guy & the illest of artists who influenced so many of his peers. I don’t know if he ever found peace but I prayed for him. We had many late night talks while he was at his drawing table across the country. I’d ask him inside baseball ?’s about the comics industry and he’d argue with me about Jay-Z lol. (btw happy birthday, bro Jigga is the only MC with 2 songs on the album and trust me… he noticed lol)

Sadly, Jason passed away in December 2022. R.I.P. J.

Blast this shit while you’re drawing comics or exercising or driving or whatever it is you do.

🎉Fun fact:🎉
In 2025, every backer of Jason Pearson’s Body Bags: Artist Edition received the soundtrack as a Kickstarter stretch goal. Find that book if you don’t already have it bcuz Keven & Scott absolutely crushed it.

My youngest has been waiting all year to be Deltron for Halloween .🎃 He loves the music and requests it often in the whip. He also loved Deltron’s appearances in Craig of the Creek. In the cartoon, Deltron upgraded Automator from cassette player to discman. Now he’s been upgraded to iPhone! 📱

Years before the presentation of the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature (won by ?uestlove) at the 2022 Academy Awards when Will Smith infamously slapped Chris Rock, these two sang his praises as a hip hop artist while promoting their movie- Top 5. Chris Rock wrote, directed and starred in it while ?uestlove was the Executive Music Producer.

I’d imagine their top 5 lists have changed since then lol.
