🚨 A beautiful showing of the Northern lights last night. While we didn’t have pillars or much movement throughout the sky this time around, it was still a great evening to be out! Did anyone brave the cold and catch the peak around 3-5a??? Looked like there were pillars visible to the naked eye. 🙏🙏🙏

Can’t get enough of these moody conditions from this past weekend in CB. I’m so thankful it all lined up the way it did. Even though the fall colors were a little scattered after one of the hottest and driest years on record, the weather more than made up for it.

Who would’ve thought that the one weekend we decided to spend in our favorite place would also bring one of the most consistently wet stretches of the year? The low clouds, fog, rain, and pockets of fall color completely transformed the landscape. Sometimes the conditions you least expect end up creating the most memorable images. taken in Crested Butte, Colorado by @scottbellow

I must’ve been dreaming…I woke up at 2am to use the bathroom and instantly saw the low cloud inversion throughout the valley from our window. I couldn’t tell if my eyes were playing tricks on me as the full moon was lighting up the entire landscape.

Either way, going back to sleep was not an option with how excited I was. I was already planning to get up early for sunrise, but seeing those conditions in the middle of the night took my anxious, overactive brain to a whole new level.

A few hours later, it all came together. The fog hung low in the valley, while the first light lit up the peaks and fall colors above it. Watching the landscape slowly reveal itself through the clouds was pretty surreal and these photos were the result. Mother Nature showing up with an A+ birthday present. Prior to this, it was raining on and off all day. The trails were soaked and outside time was limited. This beautiful sunrise over the weekend has me reflecting on how much I love our little gem of a backyard. The continued question for what the future might look like for Piney lake, reading a story yesterday about how Mormon row in GTNP is being developed (Improvements to the structures and parking lots/tour bus areas), and the roadless rule being in jeopardy, really makes you appreciate every little moment you spend out in nature. Since yesterday was a complete bust, I decided to head out again this morning to see what I could find. While the animals were certainly not moving around since it was 50° at 6a, the sunrise was 🔥A new look at an all too familiar spot, and one of the more beautiful and symmetrical reflections I’ve seen. 🚨Rumor has it new fencing and wire has gone up around Piney Lake in preparation for its closure. EDIT - apparently this was installed by the ranch and is not related to the lease agreement issues. 💔 Either way, it’s hard to imagine losing such an iconic place and staple of our valley and our freedom here is in jeopardy as conversations continue around what will happen with the 66 acre parcel that we all love so much.

Let’s make our voices heard. Comment below, spread the word, and let’s do everything we can to save Piney Lake. What kind of memories have you created here, and what does no longer having access mean to you?
