Join us for a special Art for Breakfast with Matthew Draper in conversation with journalist and author Jan Patience, exploring his new exhibition, The Small Isles. 📅 Saturday 14 November ⏰ 10.15–11am 🎟️ Tickets are £10 — link in bio Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna are among Scotland’s most captivating islands, loved for their dramatic landscapes, changing weather and extraordinary light. Over the past two years, Matthew has returned repeatedly to the west coast, observing these islands from the mainland and capturing their changing moods in chalk pastel and charcoal. In conversation with Jan Patience, Matthew will share the stories behind his travels, the challenges of working directly from the landscape and how he translates fleeting moments of light and atmosphere into his remarkable paintings and drawings. Jan is a familiar and engaging voice in Scottish art, and this promises to be a lively and insightful conversation, with an opportunity to ask Matthew your own questions. Enjoy a morning surrounded by Matthew’s beautiful new work and discover what makes these islands such an enduring source of inspiration. This is a seated event. Places are limited, so please reserve your place in advance. Link in bio to book your tickets today! 🔗 ACCESSIBILITY Please note that The Gallery is on two floors, which is accessed by sets of stairs. Our Garden is open during fair weather only. by @scottishgallery

GHOST HOSTING: A CALL TO GALLERIES AND ARTISTS 👻 This isn’t a Halloween message, but there is an issue that has been haunting in the art market for years that we need to talk about: ghost hosting. Put simply, this is when a gallery or arts organisation advertises artworks for sale on its website that it does not physically hold. Sometimes this is down to poor housekeeping following an exhibition. We all make mistakes, and these are easily corrected. Intentional ghost hosting artworks to create the impression of a larger offering than a gallery or organisation actually holds is another matter entirely. It undermines confidence in the market, the artists, all galleries, and collectors alike. We have occasionally discovered artists with numerous artworks available across multiple gallery websites, sometimes with the same work appearing in more than one place. How is a collector supposed to know what is genuinely available, or where to buy it? It creates confusion, dilutes the impact of the artist and exhibition, and is a real turn-off for potential buyers. During the pandemic, we temporarily hosted artworks for artists who could not access their studios. It was an exceptional situation, and the arrangement ended when those restrictions were lifted. The principle is simple: if you are advertising an artwork for sale on your website, you should physically hold that work. To practising artists, please check your digital footprint. Where is your work being advertised? Is it genuinely available? Are there duplications? To galleries and arts organisations selling art across Scotland and the UK, please review your policies and your digital housekeeping. Please remove artworks you no longer hold and stop advertising work that isn’t in your possession. We all have a responsibility to protect the integrity of the art market, support artists and give collectors confidence in what they are buying. Can we please put an end to ghost hosting. Step downstairs this November and be prepared to be amazed by the extraordinary work of Cleo Mussi. There is so much to discover, not only in the astonishing craftsmanship, but in the ideas, memories, histories and humour held within every work. Using reclaimed and forgotten ceramics, Cleo transforms fragments of discarded tableware into intricate mosaics filled with pattern, character and storytelling. Natural Systems celebrates the botanical world, folklore and our connections with nature, but every piece rewards a closer look. You may find yourself staying rather longer than you intended! Cleo is travelling from Stroud to join us in Edinburgh, so don’t miss the opportunity to meet the artist this Saturday. Explore the exhibition in person and online - link in bio. A wonderful weekend for Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912–2004), with the opening of a major retrospective at Tate St Ives, celebrating one of Britain’s most remarkable modern artists. If you are visiting Cornwall, this is an exhibition not to be missed – it is now open and runs until 3 May 2027. Throughout October, we have celebrated Barns-Graham’s extraordinary achievements in printmaking with our exhibition Printed Rhythms. Her later prints, many created in collaboration with Graal Press, are full of colour, energy and invention, revealing an artist whose creativity never stood still. The Scottish Gallery represented Barns-Graham during her lifetime and has continued to champion her work ever since. We are now delighted to announce our exclusive partnership with the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, acting as exclusive agent for her prints. Explore her remarkable prints on our website, link in bio and discover the retrospective at Tate St Ives. #WilhelminaBarnsGraham #TheScottishGallery #TateStIves #ScottishArt #Printmaking Image: Glacier Crystal, Grindelwald, 1950, as part of Tate St Ives exhibition © Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust A wonderful weekend for Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912–2004), with the opening of a major retrospective at Tate St Ives, celebrating one of Britain’s most remarkable modern artists.
