Riesling. From Mosel. On the steep slopes. Tick, tick, tick. An old world classic like this is a steal full price at Tesco anyway, but at £5.07 it's illegal not to.

Haut-Medoc Cru Bourgeois from 2019. 2 levels up from plonk, but before Bordeaux gets really eyewatering. And 6 years old! More Cabernet Sauvignon than Merlot, so should be like sucking on a pencil while eating Black Forest gateau. £7.49

Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the best new world appelations for it - Aconcagua Valley. £5.62

Sicilian Grillo (what marsala is made from) - a great alternative to Albarino, which you struggle to get for under a tenner these days. £5.43 by @scrape.the.barrel

Another winner from @sainsburys. I had never heard of his grape before and while the marketing is a COMPLETE LIE - it’s not full bodied or luscious - this is a great alternative to a Beaujolais, which I suppose makes sense for northern Italy. £7.50 full price. You get tart red fruit and lip smacking acidity - and apparently almond and fir as it matures. by @scrape.the.barrel

As you can tell I hated this 😹. #Coonawarra is a premium appellation of Cabernet Sauvignon and this £7.50 bottle (before offers) delivers. Black fruit, green pepper, and some lovely cedar from oak ageing, without dominating the characteristic notes. Value for money is scarce these days without waiting for a discount - stock up on this one from @sainsburys while you can! by @scrape.the.barrel

Aldi’s £13 champagne is probably the worst one I’ve ever had, but it’s still fairly decent given that it’s got champagne appellation. Certainly beats any tank method sparkling (the eternal meh of Prosecco) but there are cavas that I find more complex. However, seeing as I was only pairing this with drunken noodles and spring rolls it entirely did the job during my Norfolk holiday. The black Kitten was of course the most delicious thing on offer that evening. by @scrape.the.barrel

@asda has their big six get 25% offer on right now. Aside from your usuals (bargainous cava, champagne, and amarone at this supermarket) you need this. It’s got to have some nerello in there. It’s slightly oaked, but won’t punch you in the face with it, and has some lovely black fruit supported by herbaceous/cedar/cinnamon notes. Finish ain’t bad neither. by @scrape.the.barrel

Never underestimate your local corner shop. This is £22 on Ocado! Learning to understand wine labels have saved me much more than the cost of my @wsetglobal qualifications over the years. by @scrape.the.barrel

*gasp* Japanese wine! It’s not bad actually. Kyoto has a similar latitude to southern Spain so Cabernet Sauvignon works. More mineral, the green pepper comes through more, and the fruit is more red and tart (cherry, pomegranate). Tasted at @asaikyotoshijo by @scrape.the.barrel
