there’s something about holding a physical piece of music 👾 the joy of really feeling like you own the music you love, a badge of real fandom, and a commitment to a full record rather than just a partial listen

for us at scratch rock records that’s been true since day one

we started out in 2012 printing cds by hand under the name schlimbum and our first proper pressing landed in 2013

it’s been a constant ever since, through the rebrand and everything since

over the years that’s meant physical releases from a twisted carnival, alien autopsy, anal drainage, @brainapemusic , @2chanty5 , KR(e)AP, orangutanz, rat biscuit, still sane, the earl of southwark, @thekidandimusic , & verbal diarrhea: a properly eclectic family and every one of them on wax or disc you can actually hold

so while the charts talk about physical pressings making a comeback, we never really saw them going away

scratch rock didn’t emerge from a scene or a movement 👾 it was born as a joke

asked what genre his band played @brainapemusic frontman minky très-vain gave a flippant, made-up answer on the spot: “scratch rock”

it stuck and a whole label grew around it

today scratch rock records carries that name into its second decade

founded in 2012 as schlimbum records by childhood friends dydy haynes and très-vain the label rebranded in 2019 to match the genre its flagship act had already invented

a fitting, self-made identity for a scene that was always diy at its core

though “scratch rock” was coined in jest the sound behind it is anything but throwaway: a genre-bending fusion of #punk #stonerrock #grunge #noiserock and #shoegaze swinging between gritty, hard-hitting verses and delicate, chiming interludes

in celebration of a decade-plus of scratch rock we dig into the label’s fiercely independent history: from BRAIN APE’s grunge-soaked early records to their newer, pop and hip-hop-inflected singles, plus releases from @2chanty5 , the siberian alien, a twisted carnival, & alien autopsy

THE KID AND I’s ‘CRASH’ ep was made on a narrowboat in limehouse and you can hear the difference 👾 @jacobrcpowell of @thekidandimusic says the band’s earlier studio sessions were shaped by the clock, with every hour precious and expensive and little room to try something that might not work

for ‘CRASH’ they moored up on minky très-vain’s narrowboat instead where there was no meter running

that freedom let them experiment, chase odd ideas, and take as long as they needed to craft the ep into something special

behind the noise 👾 @thekidandimusic on the making of their ep ‘CRASH’ and the story behind it

written largely by frontman @jacobrcpowell in the wake of a break-up and a move back home, ‘CRASH’ was born in a dark place

at the time jacob was convinced it would be his last release before disappearing from public life altogether

instead it’s become a turning point

the band talk about how the ep reframed what they’re capable of: seriously loud, in-your-face moments sitting alongside bare, vulnerable songs that aren’t afraid to let the guard down

a new blueprint for where THE KID AND I can go next? 👀

the scratch rock signees turned up with their most honest and unflinching work to date, a record that hits hard and cuts deep in equal measure

“we’ve been really lucky in this band to have had some incredible powerhouse drummers” 👾 @thekidandimusic take a moment to look back on the people who’ve shaped their sound, celebrating the collaborators who’ve passed through the band over the years

top of the list was former drummer @elvis_drummer whose thunderous playing gave the band’s songs their driving force

it’s a sound the band still carries with them, and one they talk about with real affection

this week we shine a light on scratch rock records’ love for berlin 👾 from chanty très-vain making the city her home to the label bringing its artists to the stage there: in november 2024 the BETTER TOGETHER european tour stopped at @gibneys.berlin with @brainapemusic and @thekidandimusic co-headlining and chanty in support

label co-founder minky très-vain says it best 👀 “we love berlin for how artsy it is and it very much feels like a second home for our label and our community. we’d love to explore that more as we have nothing but love for the wonderful city”

playing to a handful of people in a room that’s half empty can be a tough gig 👾 as an independent band, it’s something @thekidandimusic know well 😬

the load-in, the soundcheck, the quiet before doors, and the sinking feeling when the crowd is smaller than you’d hoped 💀

but ‘live at the temple of art and music’ is where it clicked for them

recorded in front of a room of people, it’s the night they realised it doesn’t matter if there are ten of you or a thousand 👀 it’s always been about giving people a good time and a release from whatever the week has thrown at them

every show, every crowd, every singalong from the back row counts, and they wouldn’t swap any of them

raw, loud, & heartfelt, this is THE KID AND I at their most honest

the book explores what happens when a people’s control over their own home starts to slip 👀

‘the hourglass that swallows you’ follows the ifacho as a wedding meant to unite them with their eastern masters collides with the arrival of a mysterious black ship at the edge of the desert, and asks whether they can hold onto their heritage or whether the turning of the hourglass simply can’t be stopped ⏳

today marks 25 years since 9/11

it’s a day for remembering those lost but minky très-vain also thinks it’s a time for asking what we’ve allowed fear to do to us since

“extremism thrives on segregation of thought. it pulls people into tribes, feeds on scapegoating, and leaves nuance behind”

he’s spent the last few years writing about false idols, weaponised politics, and the world we’ve inherited since that day

“nuanced, political discourse cannot coexist with extremism: only one of the two leads to unnecessary bloodshed”
