Following a live pitching panel held at The Metropole Hotel on Sunday, September 6th, four short film projects in Munster have each been awarded €14,000 in production funding, marking the official transition into production for the inaugural déascéal film scheme!

Many thanks to our amazing judges, Ailbhe Keogan, Máirtín deBarra and Aurelie Godet.

Cork City: Camphor

Marina, an Islamic scholar, reluctantly agrees to wash an elderly woman who has no family to mourn her death. Through this act of humanity, she makes unexpected discoveries about herself.

Cork County: King of the Road
Written and directed by Adam Byrne, co-written by Nancy Wrenard, produced by Ashling O’Sullivan.

A local road bowling score tears two brothers apart when a secret deal turns the game into betrayal.

Kerry: Why Are You Like This?
Written by Gearóid Kavanagh, directed by Cian O'Connor, produced by Ann Ní Chíobháin

A young boy is suspended from secondary school over a graphic short story, but in a meeting between the principal and the boy’s father, we see there might be more fact than fiction to this tale.

Waterford: Bean Sídhe
Written and directed by Adam Hart, produced by Alana Daly Mulligan.

In 19th-century rural Ireland, a grieving woman is forced into the ostracised role of a keener, only to discover her voice can summon the supernatural Bean Sidhe, transforming her grief into something ancient, powerful, and terrifying. by @screenwaterford

🎬✨ Looking Back: Making It Happen – From Script to Screen ✨🎬

Last weekend we wrapped our three part project development workshop series, delivered in partnership with Screen Waterford and led by Aoibhín Murphy.

Across three Saturdays, participants explored the full journey of bringing a project from development through financing, production and post-production to getting the finished work out into the world.

Through practical sessions, Aoibhín shared the realities of self-producing and helped participants build their understanding of what it takes to move an idea beyond the page and, quite literally, make it happen. 🎥

A huge thank you to Aoibhín, Screen Waterford, and, pictured here, our brilliant group of participants for bringing such energy, curiosity and enthusiasm to the workshops. 👏

Throughout the last month, twelve writers underwent script mentorship with a dedicated script mentor as part of the secodn round of the deascéal Short Film Scheme.

Writer Alan O'Gorman is one of Ireland's most exciting screenwriters. His feature Christy won Best Irish Film at Galway Film Fleadh 2025, and his work spans award-winning and IFTA-nominated shorts, with new projects currently in development with Netflix, the BBC, and Screen Ireland.

Mary Fox and Marty Thornton are an Irish screenwriting duo whose work spans psychological thrillers, procedurals, and socially driven drama. Their gritty short Vanilla was commissioned by RTÉ Storyland. They were recipients of the BAI/Ardán Writing Mentorship, through which they developed the psychological thriller Mercy with Oona O’Beirn, series producer of The Crown. Mercy was shortlisted for the BBC Writers Room. Recent television credits include the Euro-thriller series Hidden Assets for RTÉ/Saffron Moon and the critically acclaimed action thriller Gangs of London for Sky Atlantic/AMC+. They are currently writing season four of Hidden Assets and developing a legal drama In Camera with Keeper Pictures.

Aisling Byrne is an award-winning writer and director working in film, television and theatre. Her short film work - including HEADSPACE, MISREAD, TURNAROUND and MARY IS MISSING - has earned multiple Oscar-qualifying honours, including two Academy-Qualifying Grand Prix awards at Cork International Film Festival, the Tiernan McBride Award at the Galway Film Fleadh and the Light in Motion Award at Foyle Film Festival. Her films have screened at dozens of international festivals, with further recognition including European Film Awards shortlisting, IFTA and Dublin International Film Festival Discovery Award nominations. Her latest short, MARY IS MISSING, qualifies to be considered for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short in 2027 and is currently on the festival circuit. Her previous short film TURNAROUND has been acquired by a major international streamer and will have its worldwide television premiere in January 2026.

This month we're celebrating the wonderfully talented Kilkenny based Writer Gillian Grattan whose work has been produced for the screen, stage and radio. Gillian's screenwriting credits include Mr Sun, Baby's Last ride, Debs night and Punctured. In 2025, she and her writing partner won the Boyne Short Film Bursary for Faking Fungie, which subsequently won the Directed by Her Screenplay award and was a finalist at Comórtas Físín. Gillian also works with community and arts groups to develop screen projects. Her documentary Unspoken Voices, created with the Talking Heads Aphasia Group, Carlow, is scheduled to be screened at Dáil Éireann in 2026. We're truly honoured to have Gillian in the South East Women in Film Network, where we aim to offer support through building a vibrant creative community in the region.

Stay posted for upcoming events this autumn 🎬💖 by @screenwaterford
