Japan Day 12: On our final touring day in Japan we travelled to Osaka to see a demonstration of sumo. It was such fun! In the evening, we had the opportunity to visit with some beautiful geiko (geisha) and learn about their chosen life. They are lovely women and out of respect for their privacy, no pictures will be posted here. The journey home starts now. by @scress519

Japan Day 11: Our day began with a sobering visit to Hiroshima. The Peace Park is anchored at one end by on of the few buildings left standing after the atomic bomb blast. It is known as the Atomic Dome and is an eerie sight. At the other end is the cenotaph to those killed in the blast. A stone box under a simple arch contains the names of all those who perished that day. Then we went by ferry to Miyajima Island where the most photographed Floating Torii Gate marks the entry to a Shinto shrine. by @scress519

Japan Day 10: You can count on it being a good day when it starts with a visit to the Golden pavilion. It was once the retirement villa for the Shogun but then became a Buddhist temple. The setting is spectacular. We moved on to Nijo Castle which is known for its highly decorative architecture and its “chirping” nightingale floors. The floor boards chirp as you walk on them and you feel as though you are surrounded by birds. To get back to our hotel, we walked through Nishiki market which is jammed with shops and today, with shoppers also. by @scress519

Japan Day 9: We have arrived in Kyoto. In the middle of a very busy city is an oasis around Tenryu-ji Temple. The cherry blossoms may have faded but the azaleas, camellias and wisteria are blossoming everywhere. We also visited Okochi Mountain Villa via the incredible bamboo forest. This was the home of Okochi Denjiro, a popular samurai film star. Our lunch featured traditional Buddhist cuisine. by @scress519

Japan Day 8: We visited Kenrokuen Gardens and Kanazawa Castle before heading in to one of Kanazawa’s oldest geisha districts. There we were lucky enough to find several people in authentic clothing who were very cooperative about having their photo taken. I am not good at approaching people to ask if I can take their picture but I was fortunate to be exploring with Cheryl, who is very relaxed about doing just that. I really benefitted from her ability to put people at ease. by @scress519

Japan Day 7: on our way to Kanazawa, our first stop was a UNESCO Heritage site featuring a historic village filled with traditional farmers homes. Then we were off to wander through a fish market before lunch. Our final stop was the Gold Museum where we learned about the process of making gold leaf. Kanazawa produces almost all of the gold leaf made in Japan. by @scress519

Japan Day 6: We spent the day exploring the oldest parts of Takayama and the morning market by the river. Moving on tomorrow. by @scress519

Japan Day 5: It was a travel day with two different trains. The first was a bullet train. No music to go with this video. The train provides its own soundtrack! In seven seconds this 16 car behemoth clears right through the length of the station. But when you are riding in it, you have no sense of how fast you are going. by @scress519

Japan Day 4: My photos have loaded in the wrong order so here goes. I started my day with a morning walk along the shore of Lake Ashi where the swan boats looked ready to launch. We travelled by cable car to the sulphur fields which provided lots of stinky memories but some more beautiful views of Mt Fuji coming out of the clouds. She was a bit of a tease today. At the end of the day, it was time for a rest at the foot bath at our hotel which is where you see all of the folks sitting under the umbrellas. It was the perfect spot to soak weary feet after a long day while gazing out over the lake. by @scress519
