Whenever I climb through the endless line of tombstones, making my way to where you are, very often, I'm stopped in my tracks, struck by the beauty and tranquility of the moment. It's one of those times when I can't help but fish out my phone in an attempt to capture all that I can see. And yet, I'm unable to fully grasp the essence, fully delight in your grace. For the photographs are empty of the thoughts churning behind these irises. And yet, I carry on clicking, thinking, sighing, my eyes taking in the poetry, my thoughts stretching it out into prose. And yet, even when I'm labeled disrespectful to the dead, I know they understand my plight, they know how wretched it feels to have a soul scream for its words to take flight. I know they understand, so I dip my quill into the black of my sins and the blues of my mind, for what's a better place to write a eulogy for yourself than a graveyard adorned in gold and green?

The alphabets have slowly been taking their leave of me. I try to reason with them. I try to plead. They tell me there's more grief than sunshine in my mind. They tell me I'm losing my ability to paint blues onto yellow pages. They tell me it's because I haven't been pulling my weight lately. I tell them everyday, I whine that my creative spell is wearing off as I age. I ask them, how am I to spill blues in a world spilling red on all fronts? They look at me, shaking their heads solemnly. Today, only A empathizes. A, the alphabet of the beginning and the end. A, the letter of my existence. A, where I begin and I end. A, the letter God chose for Himself. Today, A urges me gently to put my pen onto the paper once more. And so here I am, the alphabets seem to come to me again. They urge me to write about the lands reduced to rubble, to write of the children with eyes brimming with deathly grief, of prose being the weapon of wars, of poetry being nothing if not of resistance.

I found myself at the threshold again. The place where it all began. It's no longer the one we kept to ourselves, people always crowd around it with their cameras and guides. And yet, they don't know of it as intimately as we do, they'd never know, they were never there then, when we sat on those very steps, anxious not to get caught, chewing on the paan you carefully made with enough gulqand tucked within. And they don't see you now as I still do, standing there sporting your krisp, white chogha with the blotch of blood still fresh on your chest, giving away our beginning and our end. I worried about being seen, by these people separated by a century. I worried about the difference in what they'd see and what they'd perceive. I worried our existence would be meddled with, lost in translation, our culture, our history, our love from that generation, so I took it upon myself to prevent so, wore the jhumkay and the white gharara that haunted many a soul on occasional full moons. Painting my hair black again, my feet forever laden with anklets from the past, I head up the steps for one last lesson on history.

It's that decade of life, the age where you lose yourself in the antiquities and artifacts, trails of thoughts inspired by them, wondering about how in the blink of an eye, you'll soon find yourself sporting moonlight hair and sombre smiles, wondering how all those years rolled by, pondering on everything you know, everything you don't and everything you shall never.

Time keeps flowing out of my hands, escaping like granules of sand from within the spaces between my fingers. Flowing out, beyond my vision, beyond my reach, until I've lost all track of it. There have been many moments where I've reached out to pull the lever, maybe push the button on the bus, to momentarily stop the flow of time, to freeze life as it rolls for one mini second. And yet, I hesitate, my hand stuck in mid air. I knew then, perhaps what was known all along, of every second ticking away to be a blessing and a curse.

You've lurked around in my mind more than I'd like to admit. Everywhere I went, people talked about how you've trespassed. How you've strung along the soul of their beloved, as you walked out their door, sighing. It made me wonder and so I did. I wondered how you looked when you bent over them. I wondered if you had the same expression you would have when you bent over me multiple times, with your lips inches away from mine. I wondered why you never could take it to completion. I wondered if you left everyone yearning yet relieved like me. I wondered if you felt as intoxicated as your victims in that moment. And I wondered, if what I'd seen was anguish in your eyes or had it been euphoria. I wondered, until I got drunk on you. So I went from door to door to ask about you, traced your footsteps, met your lovers without malice, wrote poetry about your lavender eyes, like a mad woman. Until you wrote to me. Asked me out to your nearest playground yet, warned me not to come to your abode, uninvited. You told me to wait until you came to me first. But you knew me and you knew me well. You knew I wouldn't listen. And so, when I stepped into your grounds, I knew I wouldn't have found you there. But I bathed in your essence anyway, for I could feel you there even when you weren't, and to me that was quite enough. And I still stroll there to water the roses you planted eons ago. Like soft notes of music hanging in the air, I'm reminded of when Rio said, "Just like the day when I went to see you with roses in my hand and you didn't show up.", How beautifully tragic and accurate. I haven't seen you since and I wait, patiently, while the watering cans pile up with each year that rolls by.

like the whispers and hums

Echoing into the void,
