This week we’re celebrating the publication of Anjet Daanje’s masterful The Song of Stork and Dromedary, translated by @davidmckay9534.

Inspired by the work of Emily Brontë, it focuses on the lives of eleven characters across over 200 years. Each is connected by repetitions and recurrences, signs and symbols, but stands alone as its own distinct story

Here’s a short introduction to each one of them. Who are you most interested to discover more about?

After the death of her daughter, Susey, Susan Chester finds solace and purpose in preparing bodies for their burial. But an encounter with the corpse of Eliza May Drayden changes the course of her life.

Grace Appleton lives a quiet life in the shadow of the Draydens, but her marriage to the widower of Eliza’s sister, Millicent, brings her closer to them than she had imagined.

When Kathleen Chambers’s mother, Eliza May Drayden’s biographer, is disgraced and discredited, her family is thrown into poverty.

Emery’s family believe he is cursed, that every first son is doomed to die young on a day relating to the number seven. He survives, but grows up lonely, imagining the ghost of Eliza May Drayden for company.

In America, Clyde Middleton marries an enigmatic woman newly emigrated from England. At first they struggle to connect - until they begin writing novels for one another.

The son of the gravedigger who buried Eliza May Drayden keeps a secret his whole life, only sharing it with his wife, Betty.

Two twin girls share one identity and one name in order to take part in their father’s spiritualist scams, forging an intense, inseparable bond.

Amelie grows up in thrall to her sister, with whom she shares a complex, turbulent relationship — until they are forced to flee their countryside home as it’s consumed by the Western Front.

Dagmar and her sister, growing up in England, must conceal their German heritage as the Second World War breaks out. As they grow up, their hidden identities find an outlet in their letters to one another.

The unremarkable son of an antique book collector forges a life and a family with a woman with a wildly opposing worldview — until disaster shakes his beliefs to their core.

The Song of Stork and Dromedary
by Anjet Daanje, translated by David McKay (@davidmckay9534)

The book that has been called the Dutch novel of the century, and its author named as a ‘formidable present-day contender’ for the Nobel Prize in Literature by The Wall Street Journal @wsj.

In a rare peek behind the pages of this mythical book — author Anjet Daanje explains the philosophy behind its enigmatic title.

‘... You could translate the title The Song of Stork and Dromedary as The Song of Meaning and Sophistry. In other words, the title is a metaphor for life.

"The Song" contains a torrent of stories and details, just like life itself, and every reader can find their own way through the novel, just as they can in life, making their own connections and assigning them their own meanings, and thus discovering their own rocks that give meaning to the world inside the novel ...’

coming march 2027, the long cloud by hector mackenzie
@hectormackenzieofficial

xander is ageing out. a former high school jock turned model, he’s spent a decade in london riding a carousel of validation and success. now the ride is slowing down.

when his much-more-successful actor girlfriend, tessa k, buys him a plane ticket home to new zealand for the first time in ten years, xander returns as a stranger. the family farm is for sale. his mother is overbearing. his high school ex wants to reconnect. and his life is unravelling.

then he meets someone younger, someone vibrant and unburdened, who makes him fall back in love with the small town he fled. but is she the cure for his problems or just another symptom of how empty his life has become?

in the long cloud, newcomer hector mackenzie captures the anxious rhythm of life in your 20s — a tender, often funny meditation on masculinity, beauty, and mortality that proves you might be able to go home, but you can never truly go back.

'a novel about coming home after a long time away and feeling like you’ve time travelled. it’s about slipping into the pleasant haze of the past. it’s about the sickly sweet feeling of nostalgia and how quickly it curdles into something ugly and desperate … in xander, hector mackenzie captures the frenzies of youth and the ruins it can leave behind, delivering a man whose tragedy is no less gripping for being entirely self-inflicted.’ - joe murray, readings

‘a timely, timeless book about leaving and returning, failure and success, ambivalence and disappearance, things and people left behind. it’s funny, snarky, touching, and profound.’ - chris kraus, author of i love dick and the four spent the day together @chriskraus7
