Finished it, and I don't know how to feel yet. It was heavy, beautiful, and cruel all at once.

It made me see that the good people aren't always the ones we look up to. Courage doesn't announce itself, and you can never tell what it will look like until the moment it asks something of someone.

My heart is broken, but I'm also in awe of how writers of that era put the unsayable into words.

Partition novels aren't easy reads. They take a big heart to pick up, and they leave you with a bigger one, or maybe just a more tender one.

If you've read it, tell me how you felt when you reached the last page. πŸ€πŸ“–

Notes From Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky

βββββ˜† (4/5)

The opening line is impossible to look away from; it corners the reader immediately.

β€œI am a sick man… I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man.”

Notes from Underground reads less like a conventional novel and more like being trapped inside an escalating, claustrophobic confession (or a ranting monologue).

The Underground Man is a creature of pure contradiction: one moment he claims supreme intellectual superiority, and the next he eviscerates himself, exposing his own pettiness and impotence. Yet what makes the book truly unsettling is that his arrogance and his insecurity are not opposites; they feed each other. Haunted by real and imagined humiliations, he attempts to rebuild his dignity by mentally placing himself above a world he despises, only to sink deeper into self-loathing. In exposing his own venom, Dostoevsky holds up an uncomfortable mirror to the irrational, spiteful corners of human consciousness.

In the second half, Dostoevsky translates this fractured psychology into action. Through pathetic clashes with former schoolmates and a heartbreaking encounter with Liza, a young prostitute, we see the narrator's tragedy: terrified of genuine vulnerability, he sabotages love and chooses cruelty simply to maintain control.

Though a short read, Notes from Underground leaves an outsized, unforgettable impact. By laying bare the narrator’s spite, Dostoevsky holds up an uncomfortable mirror to the irrational corners of human pride.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Rating

I picked up Animal Farm expecting a critique of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and Stalinism. What I found was something much bigger: an anatomy of how freedom slowly disappears while we're watching.

It's easy to hate Napoleon and Squealer. But Orwell's hardest mirror is pointed at the rest of the farmyard. Power corrupts, but it only wins when we stop remembering and stop asking questions.

Every generation needs to read this book, and reread it. πŸ–

This isn't just a conventional book review; it is an encounter with a warning that refuses to age. George Orwell's Animal Farm is often categorized as an allegorical critique of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and the rise of Stalinism, but reading it today reveals something far deeper and more universal: it is an anatomy of how human freedom slowly evaporates under our own watch.

The story begins with pure idealism. The animals overthrow their negligent, cruel master, Mr. Jones, dreaming of a paradise where no creature is exploited, and the fruits of their labor belong to everyone. They paint the Seven Commandments on the barn wall with pristine white paint, establishing that "All animals are equal."

Yet, almost immediately, the revolution against dictatorship lays the foundation for a new one.

It starts not with violence, but with subtle compromises. The milk and fallen apples are reserved exclusively for the pigs, justified by Squealer as "brainwork." When questions arise, they are immediately smothered by weaponized loyalty: "Do you want Jones to come back?"

Soon, the intellectual rival Snowball, who dares question policy and dream of modernization, is chased out by savage dogs raised in secret. From that moment on, Snowball ceases to be a former comrade; he becomes a phantom scapegoat. Every broken windmill, diseased harvest, or administrative blunder is branded as Snowball’s hidden treason. Anyone who questions the state narrative is not just mistaken; they are labelled "anti-farm."

What broke me most upon this reading was the tragedy of the working class embodied by Boxer, the cart-horse. With his twin creeds, "I will work harder" and "Napoleon is always right", he poured his sweat into the windmill with unshakeable devotion. Even the brave hens, who staged a brief protest to protect their eggs, were starved into submission and branded traitors. When Boxer’s lungs eventually broke, his lifelong loyalty was not rewarded with an honorable retirement in the pasture. The pigs sold him to the knacker’s slaughterhouse to purchase a case of whiskey. Devotion without discernment is suicide in the eyes of a by @script._and_.social

Book Review: Musafir Cafe by Divya Prakash Dubey

Spoiler alert 🚨

The opening of this book is easily its absolute best part. The first meeting between Sudha, a sharp divorce lawyer, and Chandar, an engineer balancing family expectations, is pure cinematic delight, full of witty banter and effortless chemistry. The narrative smoothly captures modern urban romance, family pressures, and Chandar’s growing urge to escape corporate burnout, a dream that eventually takes him to the mountains to start the cafe.

Where the story lost me was the emotional turn in the second half. The sudden unplanned pregnancy and Sudha quietly walking away with the child felt engineered to soften her into a selfless martyr, sparing Chandar from guilt. Add to that Chandar's secondary relationship with a pretend living arrangement, his lack of real emotional growth, and Sudha's unnaturally calm return around his new engagement, and it all wraps up far too conveniently for a story that started with such honest realism.

Overall, Musafir Cafe is a light, breezy read with a stellar first half and a cozy mountain backdrop. While the emotional resolutions didn't fully suit my taste, it remains a quick, engaging slice of contemporary fiction.

Rating: 3 / 5

Read If You Enjoy: Breezy urban romance, mountain cafe aesthetics, and quick, conversational reads.
