She left a tobacco company for a company developing cancer therapies. Jessica Yuan ’21 MBA says Santa Clara is where the flip started.

Ten years ago, Jessica worked in procurement for a tobacco company. Her family had been affected by cancer, and she kept asking whether the work matched the impact she wanted to have.

She had already started over once. She left Shanghai to follow her husband to the U.S. for his Ph.D., retrained as a CPA, and raised three kids across four states.

Then came @scubusiness. The program kept her close to family in the Bay Area, accepted her CPA credits in place of the TOEFL and GMAT, and came with a scholarship. In one class, Professor Chris Paisley had students draft year-over-year comparisons from Fortinet’s financial books. A Varian Medical Systems internship followed. So did @gileadsciences, which she found on Santa Clara’s internal job board.

Jessica is not Catholic. The Jesuit emphasis on purpose and service still shaped her move into healthcare, she says.

Today she is a finance business partner at Gilead Sciences, overseeing budgeting and global manufacturing strategy for a biotech developing therapies for HIV, liver diseases, and cancer. This spring, she came back to campus to co-host a panel on AI and healthcare with speakers from her own network.

“Santa Clara was the starting point for me to flip from a cancer-causing industry to a cancer-curing industry.”

Co-founding an early-stage venture capital firm before graduation? Meet Ryan Quinn ’27 and Eph Esson ’26. 💼🚀

At Santa Clara, Ryan and Eph found an entrepreneurial ecosystem that gave them opportunities to learn venture capital by doing it—and eventually invest in their own peers.

Through the University's Ciocca Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s Venture Virtuoso program, they gained hands-on experience managing early-stage funds, analyzing real-world deals, and learning alongside active venture capital investors. They took that experience beyond the classroom and into Silicon Valley, co-founding Linda Mar Ventures, an early-stage investment firm focused on identifying and supporting high-potential founders emerging from overlooked university ecosystems.

As student-investors who navigated the campus-to-startup journey themselves, Ryan and Eph are now using their experience and network to help other founders make that same leap.
