Delivered “Stapled” today 😆

Created from thousands of staples removed from Louisville Metro inmate records during an extensive archival audit, each staple represents an individual inmate. Formed into a balancing scale, the sculpture explores the weight of incarceration, accountability, and the pursuit of justice.

“Please, make yourself at home.”

At first glance, it may just look like a coat rack, but it’s much more than that. I built this coat rack and permanent coat installation from a coat belonging to a current resident, Mia Harris, from this housing shelter, Arthur Street Hotel. The purpose of this is to provide a fully functional coat rack; an ordinary object associated with arrival, comfort, and routine. Hanging up a coat signals that someone is settling in, setting down the weight of the outside world and becoming at ease in a space.
Within the context of the Arthur Street Hotel, the coat rack becomes a symbol of welcome and permanence, suggesting not just temporary shelter but the possibility of home. By including Mia’s coat as a permanent element, I honor the agency of the people who live within the building.

Yes it’s a real coat
Yes it’s permanently attached
Yes it’s hard lol (coated in resin & paint)
Yes I gifted the woman a brand new coat
Yes it’s fully functional and can be touched

Thank you @hannahdontdewitt for inviting me to be apart of this project with @louisvillevisualart by @sculptingme_

Thank you to everyone who attended the “Perspectives” opening at Moremen gallery. I’m beyond grateful for the continuous love and support that I receive throughout my artistic career.
If you weren’t able to make it swing by the Moremen gallery to check out all the amazing work on display.

This piece is titled “Demanding Change”
Demanding Change is an installation arrangement of real, used, citizen-handmade, protest posters and signs from the 2020 Breonna Taylor and George Floyd protests here in Louisville. 2020 was marked down in history as a movement advocating for racial justice and police reform nationwide.
Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old, African American, emergency medical technician, was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officers in her apartment during a no-knock search warrant on March 13, 2020. Later, George Floyd was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25, 2020 by restraint and neck compression from police brutality. These tragic deaths sparked major protests nationwide with Louisville being one of the focal points.
Every single protest sign displayed was used in Louisville protests. These were all handmade by different citizens that reside in the city of Louisville, Kentucky. The objective of displaying these artifacts is to put the viewer present in these monumental events that call for systemic changes in policing, including accountability measures, the reallocation of funds from law enforcement to social services, and an end to racial profiling. taken in Moremen Gallery by @sculptingme_
