How much do you really earn as a Pilates instructor?

Y’all know I love talking about this and the reason that I love it so much is because I feel like the lifestyle of a Pilates instructor on social media is so far from how it really is in real life.

Yes, you can make a livable wage teaching only group classes, HOWEVER, it will burn you out much faster than you think.

On top of that, a lot of studios work with a bonus system where they will pay you depending on how many people attended your class.

I was real naive and thought I could build out my schedule to teaching 20 hours a week and that I’ll just focus on waitlisting every single one of my classes but honestly, I reached 17 classes on my busiest week and realized hell nah this is not it.

The reality is, is that most instructors on here have multiple revenue streams.

So, I’m on a journey right now figuring out how on earth I can make teaching Pilates my full-time career. I don’t have it figured out just yet, but stay tuned by following @sculptwithscar ✨

I went from working a 6-figure corporate job I hated to teaching a barre class in front of 100 people sponsored by my dream brand in the span of 8 months. Here’s exactly what I’d do again:

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given to succeed in this industry?🫶

Hi, I’m Scarlett, your ex-corporate girlie turned fitness instructor. I share the realities of what it’s really like building a career in the fitness industry. Stay along for the journey and follow @sculptwithscar ✨

#lifeinyour20s #fitnessinstructorlife #pilatesinstructor #careertips #advice

Find your own style. Your music, your moves, your combos, your cues, your personality. Yes, you can be inspired by others (I very often get inspiration from other instructors) but ultimately you need to package and deliver things in your own way.

There’s no point in trying to be like someone else. People will be drawn to YOUR personality and YOUR way of teaching.

Post on socials consistently. It’s not about the followers, the likes, shares, comments, it’s about being top of mind. 99% of my offline opportunities came from annoying the 💩 out of everyone on socials. Because when someone is thinking “oh we need an instructor for this” guess whose face they’ve been seeing day in and day out.

Post on socials consistently and as often as you can.

Do things scared. Never taught a class to strangers before? Do it. Never talked in front of a camera? Do it. Never modeled before? Do it.

The only way you’ll learn and grow is by doing the uncomfortable thing. Yes you might mess up the first time, it might go horribly wrong but you’ll get over it I promise. The next time won’t be as bad as the first.

Fake it till you make it. A cheesy one, I know, but confidence is absolutely everything in this industry. If you don’t have confidence in yourself nobody else will. Teaching your first ever class? Pretend like you’ve been doing this for years.

Ask for the things you want. This one is still really really difficult for me. Believe it or not, I was super shy growing up and never asked for anything. I never even asked for a raise or negotiated my salary back when I worked corporate. But building your career as a Pil by @sculptwithscar

For those of you who are new here, hi I’m Scarlett your ex-corporate girlie turned fitness instructor 🫶

I left my corporate job back in January cause I was just absolutely burnt out. I had always wanted to be an instructor of some sorts and I thought to myself I might as well go for it and go all in. For some reason, rather than asking people for advice, I was super delusional into thinking I already knew it all. But boy was I wrong.

Being a fitness instructor is so much more than what you see on social media. The anxiety, the stress, odd working hours, the external pressure to perform or look a certain way. Not to mention taxes, invoices, insurances, no sick pay or vacation days. Nobody warned me about the difficult side of this. And to top it all off, you’ll burn out faster than you can make this financially sustainable for yourself.

So I’m on a mission to make this work for me. To find a way to build on this fitness instructor career and make it sustainable for myself.

I’ve always been that person to answer “yeah honestly not that great” when people asked how I was doing, how that job was going, how school was etc. So imma be as real as I can be with you on here and take you on this journey with me 😌❤️

Stay tuned ✨

True story: I once attended a Pilates class in this exact outfit and someone whispered under their breath that I may as well be naked..

I commented that this had happened to me on a recent post from @oneractive and accidentally triggered a few people 🤷‍♀️ If I wanna wear my itty bitty set and feel cute in it taking a Pilates class or going to the gym, then let me be pls🫶

Spending the evening with @alo was such a beautiful reminder as to why I’ve chosen the path that I’m on right now.

@galaortin and @nicole_rutsch awakened the love I used to have for moving with strength and stillness ✨ and I left feeling so grounded and inspired for what’s ahead 🫶

Thank you so much to @aloyoga @brittneyboh @girlofmitte @larioteam for inviting me into this beautiful space and creating such a grounding experience 💕

How I cleared my skin and manage my PMOS after going off the pill after 10 years ✨

I know this isn’t the type of content I usually post but something I opened up about at the start of this year and I thought I’d share a lil update on how it’s all been going!

After stopping the pill in July last year, the PMOS symptoms I’d had years before started creeping back. I was sooo happy to be off the pill and finally feel like myself again, but I was SO insecure about getting acne as an adult (something I hadn’t dealt with since I was a teenager).

On top of that, my sugar and carb cravings came back. And going from a completely sedentary job to teaching fitness full time made it even harder, because I never knew if it was my PMOS kicking in or my body genuinely needing more fuel.

I’m a very type B girlie who for the life of her CANNOT seem to build proper routines, so these are the small changes I made and things I tried to FINALLY clear my skin. I’m still working on my cravings, but that’s all part of the journey.

Everyone’s body is different, so always check with your doctor, but I hope this helps someone 🫶

None of this is sponsored, just products I genuinely use and love!

Anddd last but not least, if you have any tips that have worked for you in managing your PMOS I’d love to hear them 🫶

My skincare routine ✨

Mornings
@purito_official face wash
@dr.altheaglobal moisturizer
@beautyofjoseon_official sunscreen

Evenings
@medicube_global_official oil based cleanser
Gel based face wash
Moisturizer

2x weekly exfoliation
@paulaschoice

I started taking the @fenou.health capsules back in January after meeting the founder at a Femtech event and absolutely loved them in managing my symptoms. I’m really bad at taking supplements and don’t like taking a billion different things, so this was always a good base for me. They recently launched a liquid formula which I started this week and I’m super excited to see how my body reacts ✨

Post teaching / workout I always grab the @nocosmetics.de face mist 🫶

And lastlyyyy a few routines and habits I’ve tried to incorporate into my daily life ✨

Fitness and wellness isn’t a luxury anymore, but everybody still expects that 5 star experience… let me explain ✨

Back when I was a broke, fresh-out-of-uni 23 year old living in London, boutique fitness classes were a treat, not an everyday thing. Drop ins started at £20 minimum, so I definitely wasn’t going on a daily.

I can’t speak for London now, but in Berlin the access to boutique classes is actually INSANE. Through aggregators like ClassPass and Urban Sports Club, you pay around €70 a month and can go to boutique group classes on a DAILY basis.

The barrier to entry has dropped massively, yet clients still expect the full luxury experience: top amenities, A-star instructors etc. And don’t get me wrong I’m not complaining. Back when I was on the consumer side and discovered I had access to all these studios, I was like HELL YEAH sign me uuuuppp.

Only now that I’m on the other side do I realize how this is slowly changing the industry. Boutique fitness has moved from a luxury to everyday consumption, and that shift has hit instructor pay too. When studios earn less per client through aggregators, that often trickles down to what instructors get paid per class, which makes it really hard to do this full time.

I’m intrigued to see how this will further shape the industry, because the only way forward that makes sense financially for studios (and instructors) is to give people what they’re actually paying for

Just some food for thought for the weekend 😌🫶

Because a large part of teaching Pilates and fitness full time is giving away your energy ✨

Many instructors will tell you how taxing teaching full time is on the body, but for me personally, it’s been more emotionally and mentally draining. I am a high energy person especially when it comes to teaching and I enjoy sharing that energy with people who enter the room. HOWEVER, I have noticed how this has impacted the way I interact with my personal relationships.

A lot of the time I feel too drained to socialize and listen to my friends, family and partner and catch myself completely blanking. Not only that, but I feel so drained I don’t feel like I have the energy to focus on other things, whether that be working out for myself or working on side projects.

So, this raises the question, is it really worth it?
