Just wanted to make sure you knew that if you're at PASIC, go check out the SCV Percussion section at Sagamore on Saturday the 15th at 10AM. Paul and Sandi Rennick will be providing insights into the creative process, so you don't want to miss it.

From @percussivearts "The SCV Percussion section will showcase both battery and front ensemble portions of the drum corps while also focusing on aspects unique to SCV and go into development of the overall percussion section. These elements will be featured through small sub sections, exercises, fundamentals, and show music."

@scvanguard 2025, Paul Rennick on solos and transitions:

“I thought it would be great to sort of dissolve, and do a molto ritard. You know, back in the ‘80s, old drum corps days, there used to be a kind of a lot of that, where the drum line would accelerate or decelerando something.

And I remember seeing Santa Clara play in the ‘80s, and there was a very, very short movement, and I want to say it was about ‘85 or ‘86 and it was it was just like <sings molto rit>, “cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha…chaaah.”

And I thought it was really musical at the time!

I was only like 20 years old or something like that, and I thought, “Wow, this is like, these guys really feel the beat the same way.”

And so we just took that to the absolute extreme.

And handing it to the drill writer and expecting a 1985 arc - to play this kind of thing and getting it back and realizing they’re marching quarter notes, backwards, AND expanding the form while they’re doing this…

And I’m still amazed.

The drum staff, were totally impressed every time we hear this, because it’s really difficult to do.

And I think they the tendency is to play it well enough to make it seem like it’s sort of easy, but knowing what they’re doing — it’s really difficult.”
