Perhaps no other objects in our collection says more about how air travel has changed than these sets of silverware from various airlines. Not only are they of very high quality, the different variety of utensils show that passengers were treated to several courses, and not just a cracker. These sets are from Saudia, Olympia and Mexicana airlines. by @sdasm

#TBT to October 15, 1933 when the the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine is started for the first time. The Merlin was one of the most successful aircraft engines of the World War II era, and many variants were built by Rolls-Royce as well as by Ford of Britain at their Trafford Park factory. Among the numerous aircraft using the Merlin engines were the well- known Supermarine Spitfire (which is in our collection) and the Avro Lancaster. by @sdasm

#TBT to October 8th, 1929 when the first movies were shown on a passenger airplane. “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit” was among the two films shown at 5,000 feet on board a Transcontinental Air Transport Trimotor. We have a Trimotor in our Pavillion of Flight similar to the one on which Oswald strutted his stuff. by @sdasm

At the San Diego Air & Space Museum our collection contains many models, including tethered, gas powered ones. The tethered design was patented in 1940 by Jim Walker and introduced on his “Fireball” model. Many other models used this design, thrilling generations of future pilots. by @sdasm

#TBT to 1920 when Clyde Pangborn attempted a car to plane transfer on Coronado Beach. Although, he bit the dust, he would survive and would go on to co-pilot the first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean. You can see barnstorming aircraft like the Curtiss Jenny and Lincoln Standard at the San Diego Air and Space Museum.

Get ready for a day of engineering, coding, creativity, and flying pumpkins! 🎃 Pumpkin Chunkin’ is returning to the San Diego Air & Space Museum on October 10, from 10 am to 1 pm bringing hands-on STEM challenges and plenty of Halloween fun for kids and families.

Activities will include:
Build a Catapult: Design and construct a catapult, then see how far you can launch a candy pumpkin!
Pumpkin Parachutes: Create a parachute designed to help a pumpkin make a safe landing.
3D Pen Spider Webs: Experiment with 3D pens to create creepy-crawly spider webs.
Code a Mouse: Program a robotic mouse to navigate its way through a maze.
Create a Monster: Use if-then statements to design a monster that reacts to different situations.

And, of course, the highlight of Pumpkin Chunkin’ is the moment everyone waits for the PUMPKIN DROP! Watch as pumpkins take flight in a spectacular finale that combines a little Halloween fun with a lot of physics and engineering.🎃🍬
