#TalesfromNationals Final episode # 4
Round 10 - 2026 USPA National Championships

We felt some pressure going into round 10.
The scores were tight enough that we were battling for silver.
Fliteshop had 136, we had 125, New Shoe Crew had 122, and Wonderhogs were at 117.

Even though Fliteshop was out of reach, this was the closest we’d ever been to them.

I was determined to have fun on this skydive: “I’m just out here doin’ flips & shit and going as fast as possible.”

This round:
➡️ Block 18 - Dueling Dragons
➡️ Block 8 - Bison
➡️ Block 4 - Cogwheel

This was our most busted round, with 3 video busts.

We like it when Fener stays steep to video us.
He has to carve less, it creates a buffer if our timing is off, & it’s typically more forgiving than being at a 45* angle to us. This is not true for every team.
Your mileage may vary.

We knew Nick flying steep on this particular flow was risky.

The headdown leg grip at the bottom of the Dueling Dragons is easily eclipsed from above (we got busted on the first two of these.)

So is the foot grip at either end of Cogwheel, the mixed flips (we got busted on one of these and were scored on one that should’ve been busted.)

This round is a blur. I remember getting under canopy & feeling a wave of relief wash over me. All I had to do now was land safely.

Our friends from New Shoe Crew, Marko, Anya, & Monica, made the effort to come watch the live scoring *with* us.

We are so proud of them. They put in countless hours of work over the last 3 seasons to move from Intermediate in 2024, to Advanced in 2025, and now to giving us a serious run for our money in Open in 2026. #HWPO

They were so focused during the competition I’m pretty sure Marko didn’t even look at me once.
I’m so glad we’re friends again now Marko😆

2026 was an amazing season for MatriX!

We’re stoked to keep this thing going into 2027 for our 7th season together!

💥 MatriX MFS Monday 💥

Ever look at our jumps and think, I am struggling to just sit fly, I will never be able to do that?

The beauty of MFS is that it grows with you. Can only fly on your belly, then do the belly points. Wanna add in some adventure? Then one of you try being a back flyer. (Don’t be discouraged, back flying is hard). But there are plenty of things you can start trying in MFS that is just flat.

How important is the belly back stuff in MFS? Ask some of the recent nationals competitors. If you have a really solid foundation on belly and back it can take you a long way. So don’t over look it.

In this jump sequence during USPA nationals we got an all flat round. When these types of jumps come up it can really show where your strengths and weaknesses are. Thankfully we spend plenty of time working on these “boring” skills. And it helped us have a really solid round and gained some separation with our competitors.

Round 6 from 2026 USPA National Championships.
#TalesfromNationals Episode 3

This was our final jump of the first day of competition.
Even though this was only 1:30pm, it was brutally hot and turbulent and most of the MFS competitors were fried at this point and ready to be done for the day.

We went into Round 6 tied for 3rd with New Shoe Crew, 7 points behind Wonderhogs and 12 points behind Fliteshop.

Since we had just tied New Shoe Crew in rounds 4 and 5, we needed to push on the gas or we’d get pushed right off the podium.

This round:
➡️ Random P - Upright Half Rebel
➡️ Block 15 - Flip Flop
➡️ Random M - Caterpillar
➡️ Random B - Double Spock

We’ve been launching the P like this for three seasons now, & even began launching other head-up points like this last year, but this is the first time in comp that we nailed it so beautifully. 🎉

We’re stoked that Fener stayed so steep on us, albeit a little far away, because it was a clean round for him.
No video busts.
We got one inside bust on the outface head up point (P) by not having a clean, stationary grip.
Fair.

What screams at me while watching this jump is how dirty our simple half barrel rolls are between belly & back.
Both of us, both ways.
Simple stuff, really.
But the simple things are easy to overlook in mental prep when thinking about more complicated moves.

It’s important for Joey to send his legs TO me, & it’s extra important that I do not grab his leg before I’ve finished my half barrel roll to my back.

We’ve been busted for that in the past & is why we still “stage” the 15 a bit.
Fliteshop got busted for every single one of their 15’s for this very reason.
It’s easy & tempting to “grip and roll” this block, but that’s not legal.

We ended up with the highest score in Round 6 and finished the day in 3rd place, with only 2 points separating us between 2nd and 4th.

Here’s our Round 3 from 2026 USPA National Championships.
#TalesfromNationals Episode 2

We went into round 3 behind the other teams: 10 behind Fliteshop, 3 behind NSC, and 4 behind Wonderhogs.

I’m enjoying reflecting on the scores now, but the truth is that I (Lindsay) wasn’t thinking much about the scores during the competition.
We were focused on having fun and flying our best; a different approach from previous years.

Even though we were not looking forward to another all-vertical round, this one looked good for us because only Joey had to do transitions.
We suspected we could do well, and we did!

This round:
➡️ Random O - Versa Vice
➡️ Random D - Thermometer
➡️ Random A - MindWarp
➡️ Block 5 - Upright Auger

This launch, the Versa Vice, has to be one of my favorites. Getting to flip through the center of our head-down formation the second we leave the plane is so much fun.

This flow required two different head grips with Joey literally going back and forth between sit and head down.
Round 3 was truly The Joey Show and he crushed it!

We didn’t stay on-heading the entire time, but Fener flew his slot, high at a 45* angle, chasing the grip line, and was scored a perfect round. We are so proud of him.
I phrase it like that because there was one flagrant eclipsed grip that we were not busted for. (Tell us if you can spot it)

We got the highest score in this round, with 17 points in 35 seconds, uncommon for us with an all-vertical round.
Our focus on “basic freeflying” this year seemed to pay off.

That felt really good after fumbling round 2.

Here’s our Round 2 from 2026 USPA National Championships.
#TalesfromNationals
We will start this series of reels recapping our Nationals with our least favorite round.

We went into round 2 tied for 1st with Fliteshop. We messed up this all-vertical round so badly we ended up battling for the podium the entire rest of the competition.

This round:
➡️ Block 19 - Mixed Turnstile
➡️ Random J - Upright Star
➡️ Block 16 - Rock / Cradle

Block 19 - Mixed Turnstile, is a relatively new formation, debuting last year in the MFS dive pool. It’s simple and kind of easy, but requires a specific movement pattern.

The head-down flyer grips the sit flyers leg, they both turn AWAY from that grip, and then the head down flyer grips the other leg with their other hand.

Both last year and this year, the Mixed Turnstile came up as the first formation drawn for a round, meaning we would exit and fly that block on the hill.

Last year we royally fumbled this task and worked on it a lot this season - but never fully unlocked it.

When it came up as the exit formation again this year we couldn’t believe it. Our hearts sank.
And wouldn’t you know? We messed it up AGAIN!
Not only the exit, but we rotated in a circle the entire round and just didn’t fly with much urgency.

We got crushed in this round by just about all the teams, and it set us 10 points behind Fliteshop, and 3 to 4 points behind NSC and Wonderhogs.

I guess it’s a good thing we got this out of the way early in the comp — it lit a fire under our asses to get it together!

We are STOKED about our 2nd Place finish in the Open division of Mixed Formation Skydiving at USPA Nationals this week.

We had 5 teams in Open this year, 3 in Advanced — 8 Intermediate teams showed up for the second official year of that division.
There was a jump-off for the Gold in Intermediate. That was exciting!

Below, in the first comment, we will pin some fun MatriX team stats, but first we want to say thank you to our fellow competitors who made this a fun & close competition for us:

Fliteshop (our mentors & the G.O.A.T’s), SDO New Shoe Crew (shredders, new to Open), Wonderhogs (they’ve beat us at the last 2 comps), & Boofers (the vibes)

Just like with any activity, it takes time, focus, & lots of repetition to grow in this sport.

For us the training & the growth is what this team is all about.
Doing well in competition feels amazing, but is secondary to the fun we’re having together & the growth we’re experiencing along the way.

We’ve had this team for 6 years now and feel like we’re just getting started!

🙏We couldn’t do this without our sponsors supporting us

@skydivechicago - the best dropzone on the planet w/ the most progressive & fun DZO. Thank you for all you do for us Rook

@skydive_sebastian - our winter home for 3 seasons now. Thank you for supporting us Morgan Hahn

@uptvector - the best harness container systems allowing us to fly safely in all orientations. Proud to be Vector Athletes

@cookiehelmets - Thank you for keeping us safe & stylish, always with fresh visors & liners. So grateful

@lbaltimeters - mega focus at high speeds is only possible by the trust we have in our LB audibles. Thank you for supporting us

@flyjyro - thank you for getting us safely back to earth for over 15 years. Proud to be JYRO athletes

@verticalsuits - made for the different flying we do, in different conditions. Thank you for keeping us in the air

@gs.gear - Thank you Brian & crew for literally supporting us DAILY

@optionstudios - thank you for keeping us looking fly

Thank you to our fans who support us virtually as we keep pushing MFS in our social feeds to grow the most fun skydiving discipline there is! taken in Skydive Perris by @sdc_matrix

🤔 MatriX MFS Monday 🧐

What makes MFS so fun and unique?

Well we are glad you asked. No other competitive discipline do you get to build formations in all four orientations. Head-up, head-down, belly and back flying on the same jump!

This is a unique jump that Lindsay gets to fly in all four orientation and Joey only gets 3. It’s more common for Joey to get all four orientations. And Lindsay gets less.

This jump is N (Half Rebel) - C (Vertical Compressed) - F (Belgian Waffle) -20 (Jelly Roll).

😳 MatriX MFS Monday 🤪

MFS USPA Nationals starts in 9 days!! Wow where did this summer go?

Are we ready? I don’t think that we will ever feel ready. But we are current and flying fairly consistent.

That is all you can really hope for this close to competition time. The work has been put in, the time for learning new things has passed.

So for teams trying to squeeze out those last few training days. Keep it simple, don’t work on new things. Work on building your confidence and rhythm leading up to nationals. Going in feeling strong and confident will work way better then working on that thing you have been struggling with.

This includes your warm up jumps at nationals. Take time get familiar with the DZ, the landing area and the aircraft. Then do a few jumps that you know you will do well at. This will pay off way bigger than trying to knock out a whole day of training the day before the big event!

Invasion XXI Lineup: Presenting Nick Fener

Nick Fener has made over 7500 skydives in the last 23 years.
He says swooping is the best part of any skydive, but Nick also enjoys freeflying, movement jumps, and shooting video for his Mixed Formation team SDC MatriX.
He enjoys lifting weights, playing golf, and cold plunging for 6 minutes in 38* water every morning.
