Hi friends, we’d like to reintroduce ourselves! 👋 We are San Diego Canyonlands, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to bringing people and nature together for mutual healing. We activate local communities as stewards to advance environmental solutions. 🌱 Our 2025 Strategic Plan represents the second phase in Canyonlands’ evolution as a community-benefit environmental nonprofit. We fill a critical role in society, building climate resilience while tackling structural inequities and making nature more accessible for all - which we achieve through eight initiatives. Stay tuned as we share our new mission, vision, and operational initiatives over the next few weeks. We hope that our passion, transparency, and values resonate with you - our supportive community. Together, we will co-create positive environmental change for all! 🌎💚 #SDCanyonlands #SanDiego #SDCounty #SD #Environmental #Nonprofit #Education #Stewardship #Service #Advocacy #Community #Habitat #Restoration #Biodiversity #Change #CityHeights #Volunteering #Nature #Outdoors by @sdcanyonlands
If you’re familiar with Canyonlands, you know our mission is to promote, protect, and restore the native habitats of San Diego’s canyons and creeks. While that hasn’t changed, we’ve refocused to deepen the value of our environmental work within the communities we serve. Our updated mission is to ‘uplift communities by connecting people with nature through ecosystem restoration, workforce development, environmental education and advocacy, and by harnessing the mutually beneficial power of conservation to safeguard biodiversity and improve quality of life’. 🌱 We’ve emerged as leaders at the nexus of nature conservation, wildfire resilience, and equitable nature access. We are driven to overcome entrenched social and environmental challenges by reconnecting people and nature to achieve meaningful solutions for our region. We hope our renewed commitments to San Diego inspire you to support our team, as we strive to build resilient nature-connected local communities! 🫶 #SDCanyonlands #SanDiego #SDCounty #SD #Environmental #Nonprofit #Education #Stewardship #Service #Advocacy #Community #Habitat #Restoration #Biodiversity #Change #CityHeights #Volunteering #Nature #Outdoors by @sdcanyonlands
At Canyonlands, we envision a future where the diverse peoples of our region come together in harmony through the common cause of saving our natural heritage. However, we recognize that not everyone has the same opportunities to engage with nature for fun, work, or healing, and that social justice, environmental justice, and climate change are inextricably linked. Canyonlands is dedicated to listening to community needs and using our experience to activate people as the driving force behind local solutions. Just like the rich biodiversity of San Diego, our diverse communities are beautiful and resilient. We strive to harness the healing power of nature and community to make nearby-nature a more welcoming and safe place for all San Diegans to enjoy. 💚 #SDCanyonlands #SanDiego #SDCounty #SD #Environmental #Nonprofit #Education #Stewardship #Service #Advocacy #Community #Habitat #Restoration #Biodiversity #Change #CityHeights #Volunteering #Nature #Outdoors by @sdcanyonlands
You may have heard of Thrasher before… but today we are talking about birds, not boards! 🐦‍⬛🔥🛹 The California Thrasher are an iconic species to the California chaparral habitat, but are often hard to spot in the dense shrub.🌳 However, these lanky songbirds start to make themselves known by singing as the rainy season begins!🌧️ If you are lucky enough, you will spot its large, brown body and distinct curved bill as it perches up high, overlooking the canyon.🌿👀 Belonging to the family Mimidae, the California Thrasher is a close relative of another one of our common canyon species, the Northern Mockingbird. While the mockingbirds are better known for imitating other birds’ songs, the California Thrasher actually has the same habit! It has been known to take inspiration from other birds’ songs, and incorporate them into its own singing! 🎶🎵 See if you can find (or hear) the California Thrasher in our canyons! It’s officially Spooky season 🎃, so that means it's time for a spooky edition of Winged Wednesday! 🦇 This week’s feature is the Townsend’s Big-eared Bat! These unique bats can be found all along the Pacific coast, from Mexico to Canada! Oak woodlands offer a perfect habitat for foraging and dark roosting coverage. 🧛 Despite their impressively large ears, these little guys have a body length of just 9-11 cm!! Not only that, but they are completely nocturnal, so you’d need night vision to see them in action! 👀 Good luck trying to find the Townsend’s Big-eared bat this Spooky Season! 📸Cover image: NPS Photo via Wikimedia Commons 📸Slide 2: Stihler Craig, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service via Wikimedia Commons 📸Slide 3: Ann Froschauer/USFWS via Wikimedia Commons 📸Slide 4: Ann Froschauer/USFWS via Wikimedia Commons #SanDiego #Spooky #Halloween #Bat #Ecology by @sdcanyonlands

We’re toad-ally🐸 hyped for this Field Friday because we are featuring the California Toad! California toads are habitat generalists - they can thrive in a wide range of environmental conditions🌼🌱. That means you can find them in all kinds of communities! They are also omnivores, and they switch from eating prey🪰to eating plants🍄depending on what the habitat has to offer. Fun fact‼️: instead of long hops, California toads prefer a slow and steady crawl or walk! If you think you’ve stumbled upon one, check if it has a light colored strip that runs down its spine. If it does, you’ve likely found a California toad🐸! Snap a picture and post it on iNaturalist! 📸Cover photo: meganralph via iNaturalist 📸Slide 2: Jules Feldman 📸Slide 3: thevertebratepokedex via iNaturalist 📸Slide 4: glmory via iNaturalist #CaliforniaToad #HabitatGeneralist #Ecology #SanDiego by @sdcanyonlands
