Simon Morris, waving books, #23, Laurence Aëgerter, Tristes Tropiques: illustrations hors texte, 2011, In collaboration with Ronald van Tienhoven, (Filigranes: Paris, 2011) & Claude Lévi-Strauss, Tristes Tropiques, Plon, 1955.

“The first of the books reproduces the illustrative photographs from Claude Lévi – Strauss’s legendary memoir, Tristes Tropiques (The Sad Tropics) an account of the anthropologist’s work in the field, permeated with cultural and philosophical musings. The photographs depict the lives of a Brazilian tribe: their homes, dress, social activities, hunting practices and so on. The images are tender, but inevitably the modern eye cannot ignore the omnipresence of the photographer, a white traveller confronting the ‘exotic other’.

It is with the second book that something extraordinary happens. Within a few pages we realise that what Laurence Aëgerter and Ronald van Tienhoven have done, is re-photograph Strauss’s original images in a new setting. This new setting is (as I later learnt) the small Dutch town of Beeterzwaag and in place of naked and scantily clad Brazilians, we see naked and scantily clad Dutch townsfolk. Scene for scene, action for action, Strauss’s photographs are transposed to a different world. And in doing so, Aëgerter and Tienhoven produce a body of work that can be viewed simultaneously as an indictment of the absurdity of the ‘exotic other’ and a joyful celebration of continuity in the human condition.” – Louis Porter,

Simon Morris, waving books, #15, Jill Gibbon, The Etiquette of the Arms Trade: Undercover Drawings (Beam Editions: Nottingham, 2018) © Simon Morris

This is what John Baldessari would technically call ‘wrong’. I’m down looking after my mother this weekend and there’s no one around to take the photographs of me waving books. As a result, I’ve learnt how to do a self-timer photograph.

The results are awful.

But I kind of like this one with its ridiculously overcompensated wave, but somehow, the book lines up perfectly with the ridge of the roof, and the angle of the washing line which is just so right and so wrong.

Also reminds me of a demonstrative cricket umpire declaring someone out!

I’ve started a new art project, entitled waving books. I’m waving one book a day as the mood takes me. I’ve completed a week of waving so far. I feel as if it’s some form of semaphore, an attempt at sending a message using visual signals…

The project is inspired by images of John Baldessari and Lawrence Weiner, both waving. by @sdcmorris

Visited Harold Offeh’s exhibition at Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge today.

Mmm, gotta try a little harder, it could be sweet

Brilliant survey of Harold’s art over twenty years. Really worth visiting. Highly recommended - Harold’s work is funny, inclusive and engaging. His generous collaborative performative practice fulfils the proposition that the true measure of an artist should be based on what they enable others to do. Open until 01st March 2026.

Love the catalogue which is like a gorgeous glossy magazine with Harold lounging on the cover. Seen here with two enthusiastic readers. by @sdcmorris
