This shouldn’t even be an unpopular idea really.

I’ve been thinking about Jane Doe, all of the Jane Does, my sons, and the kind of society we’re creating through how we treat one another.

That reflection has prompted a larger question: How are we systematically teaching people to treat one another in sexual relationships?

Mandatory, evidence-based, age-appropriate sex education can help build a healthy foundation for understanding respect, consent, boundaries, and relationships. Starting young and reinforcing these lessons over time can help us carry healthy beliefs and behaviors through every stage of life, shaping how we treat one another with respect and care.

Schools can help ensure that all students receive a shared foundation of accurate, age-appropriate information, creating a common understanding that helps guide healthy interactions.

Education alone won’t end sexual violence. But it can be a meaningful part of our commitment to creating a world where every man, woman, and child of every age, gender, and racial background is treated with respect and care.

And there shouldn’t be anything unpopular about wanting that.
