The Sirens were founded in 2021, right after the announcement that the NWSL club will be in San Diego.

They have 500 members and over 50 volunteers that organize events, drum, sing, create art, and work to make sure the team is supported everywhere they go.

Community highlight part 7:

Larry Baza’s story is much bigger than Pride. He was an LGBTQ+ activist, arts advocate, cultural leader and community organizer whose work crossed racial, cultural and artistic boundaries.

Baza joined San Diego Pride’s board in 1990 and became co-chair in 1992 alongside Vertez Burks. They were the first people of color to lead San Diego Pride. Together they helped move Pride toward greater racial and cultural inclusion and helped establish the multicultural programming that became part of the festival.

Baza was also deeply involved in San Diego’s arts community. He served as chair of the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and later chaired the California Arts Council. He saw art as a vehicle for social justice and LGBTQ+ advocacy.

It is always a pleasure to host @sdsirens when San Diego Wave come to PayPal Park. Unfortunately, San Diego not only took home three points but also won in Flip Cup. It was close and we will be patiently awaiting our rematch.

Regardless of which team we support, we all agree that trans people belong. If you come for one of us, you can expect us all. by @sdsirens

Community highlight part 6:

Norman Braxton came to San Diego with the U.S. Navy in the late 1960s. After leaving active duty in 1971, he began performing as “Norma” in 1973. He is described as San Diego’s first Black drag performer.

His drag career took him around the world. In San Diego, he performed for audiences that included celebrities such as Lily Tomlin, Carol Channing and Bob Hope. He later became the 35th Empress of the Imperial Court de San Diego, an organization with a long history of LGBTQ+ fundraising.

Braxton remains active in San Diego’s drag community and was featured in a 2026 showcase celebrating veteran San Diego performers.
