"Seven years ago, Matt Tornero and Delaney Heil were at a crossroads. It was their final semester of college and they were taking the capstone class for their Honors minor. Both were wondering what would come next, not knowing that part of the answer was sitting beside them. The School of Journalism and Media Studies is hosting SDSU’s first Courage in Media Symposium, featuring speakers who will address the challenges faced by media professionals worldwide. In the U.S., despite protections inherent in the First Amendment, journalists are under attack from censorship, illegal searches, and the inability to access events and crucial information. This symposium recognizes and amplifies courageous journalism.

The distinguished guest speakers include Sami Mahdi, the former eidtor-in-chief of Amu-TV, Director of PAYK Investigative Journalism Center, Director of Radio Azadi in Afghanistan, and fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center. Venezuelan investigative journalist Clavel Rangel Jiménez is co-founder of the Network of Journalists from the Venezuelan Amazon, a fellow at the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime and an IRE (Investigative Reporters and Editors) 2024 Chauncey Bailey Journalist of Color Investigative Reporting Fellow. Patrick Butler is Senior Strategist at the International Center for Journalists in Washington, D.C., an organization that supports over 177.000 journalists worldwide who continue reporting on corruption and human rights violations despite physical threats and professional repression.

The symposium hopes to bring together members of the local bi-national media and the JMS community for meaningful conversations about courage, integrity, and the important role journalists play in informing the public and telling stories that matter. 2026 journalism alumna Frances Kowal reflects on her solo 170-mile journey along the Camino de Santiago, discovering that there was no single "right route." Through a personal reporting project, she documented the experience with daily photographs and a handwritten journal, capturing the lessons she learned along the way.
