“Ever since our first observation, I knew I loved this place.”

Thanks to a partnership between our Department of Child and Family Development and College Park Preschool, child development majors like Laurelei Vasquez have been able to gain a better understanding of both child behavior and their own career possibilities.

Today, we were proud to celebrate @dle_sdsu Associate Professor Melissa A. Navarro Martell as she was honored as recipient of the HSI Community Engagement Award at SDSU’s 2026 Diversity Excellence Awards.

Melissa was recognized for her tireless work and advocacy to advance equity and belonging for Latine, undocumented and first-generation students, as well as her leadership on bilingual and transborder initiatives.

Many of Melissa’s friends and colleagues showed up loud and proud, and she was able to share the experience with her father Jose Navarro Jr.

We celebrated some exciting news at the start of the semester as #SDSU signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Universidad Intercultural de Baja California (UIBC), laying the groundwork for future binational collaboration.

Faculty from our @dle_sdsu department played a central role in facilitating this partnership, and we are excited for the opportunities for seminars, faculty and student exchanges and much more.

Located five hours south of San Diego in the agricultural hub of San Quintín, UIBC is the region’s only intercultural university — a public institution designed to provide access and culturally-relevant programming to Indigenous communities. We have so much to learn and share.

How did COE students spend their summer vacations? Just check the postcards!

Several of our undergrads spent the summer abroad as part of Rocket Kids, a program that sends college students to provide educational and recreational programming to the children of U.S. Army service members based in Europe. Our advising team was delighted to receive postcards from several of them, including Jocelyn and Aranza who kindly allowed us to share their messages.

Interested in becoming a Rocket Kid? Swing by our Welcome to the College of Education event on Thursday, Aug. 27 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in Templo Mayor on the second floor of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.
