Three of the most popular Boeing aircraft lined up in a row!
A Southwest B737-700 leads a Delta B767-300, while the Queen herself, Lufthansa’s B747-400, follows in their tire tracks. Each aircraft is a pinnacle for Boeing in three different markets of aviation!
The 737, designed for short and medium range flights, is one of the most successful aircraft of all time, with over 10,000 aircraft being built since 1967! Boeing has offered 4 main variants of 737s over the years, with the subvariants totaling over 15 different types of 737s! Production is still rolling today as newer models are produced to replace older generations.
The Boeing 767 was built for long haul routes too thin for the 747, as well as key domestic markets in the USA. Over 1,200 aircraft have been built since it entered service in 1982! Boeing’s “successor” to the passenger 767 is the 787 Dreamliner, however the 787 isn’t a true match since its smallest model is larger than most 767s. Boeing still produces 767 Freighters though, since there is no cargo variant of the 787.
Perhaps no mass produced aircraft is more iconic than Boeing’s “Queen of the Skies”, the 747! With the signature upper deck “hump”, the 747 was designed to make cheap long haul travel a reality. In partnership with Pan Am, Boeing produced the world’s first twin aisle airliner, which was dubbed the “Jumbo Jet”. With 5 main variants, and more subvariants, the 747 has been in production for over 50 years! However, times are changing and there are less than 10 747s left to be delivered before production shuts down for good. Demand for large passenger jets has all but vanished, as newer and smaller players take over the scene. However, Boston remains a city where it is still possible to see these old rare birds in action!!

Nothing more majestic than the Queen at dusk!!

As the sun sets on another year, this is my favorite sunset picture from 2024! Cunard Line's Queen Mary II, the world's last Ocean Liner, departs Boston Harbor at sunset for Southampton, UK embarking on a transatlantic crossing that her many predecessors were known for. While all cruise lines have long since transitioned to cruises focusing on exotic destinations, Cunard is the only company that has maintained a scheduled transatlantic service from the UK to the US since its inception in 1840, keeping its heritage alive!

As 2024 closes, a reflection of the year includes many firsts, accomplishments, and new beginnings for me!!
Visited 4 new countries, checked off one new state and two new Canadian provinces. Rode 3 new airlines, 6 new aircraft types, and 10 new railroads!! Saw the world's largest cruise ship, rode 7 new Amtrak routes and 2 new VIA routes, completed a move, and celebrated a major birthday!! Saw the Aurora Borealis twice, took over 10000 camera shots, and received my captains license and got signed off on two vessel classes within the company!! Probably forgetting a bunch of things too lol but perhaps most importantly, made so many new friends, met amazing people across the world, and didn't hold back from chasing the experiences I wanted!!
Here's to more in 2025!!!

A throwback to the busy summer season, Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas begins its spin shortly after backing out of the Reserve Channel just as Icelandair glides by, moments away from completing a flight from Reykjavik.
Large ships moving in and out of the Reserve Channel along the South Boston Waterfront can pose a unique problem for arriving flights into Logan Airport, with many cruise and container ships forcing runway changes and even holding patters while they transit around the runway thresholds!

Happy Pride Month!!

San Francisco Muni PCC 1062, built in 1948 and adorned in a beautiful Pittsburgh Railways Company "white face" livery, departs the loop at Market & Castro for the trip back down Market Street towards Fisherman's Wharf

The towering Pride flag in the background honors the iconic Gilbert Baker, the pioneer who created the Pride flag back in the 1970s at the request of Harvey Milk, and who called San Francisco home for over two decades

Another sunset photo to cap off the sun setting on 2025, a year which has felt like a decade...

A year in which I have truly lived in the present - did more traveling than ever before: getting up to 48 states on the quest to all 50, knocking off a new country, crossing the ocean on an ocean liner, and crossing continents on the rails!
A year in which my career has progressed massively: started off driving water taxis, and ended driving higher speed ferries with a nice raise alongside!
A year in which I have tried to decipher faith and fate, written more poems than I can count, found a singing voice again, and improved the photographic eye.
A year that tested bonds, brought me closer to the ones that matter most, made me value connections and trust silences.
A year that has tested patience, pulled strings, levied emotions...

The Queen Mary: a gateway to history

Perhaps the best example of a preserved ocean liner, she was launched in the mid 1930s and was one of the fastest ships of her time! Alongside her running mate, the Queen Elizabeth, she represented Cunard Line and the UK in the transatlantic market through the Second World War and into the dawn of the jet age. Known as the "Grey Ghost" during WWII, the Queen Mary still holds the record for most people on a ship at once when she carried over 16,000 troops on a single voyage!

Full of history, the majestic Queen Mary lives on in Long Beach, CA, now serving as a floating hotel and museum, proudly displaying her 90+ years of history and keeping ocean liners in the books!!

The historic and legendary ocean liner SS United States docked in Mobile, AL

Launched in 1952, she was the flagship of the United States Lines and also known as "America's flagship" as she was largest ocean liner entirely constructed in the USA! Despite not operating in service since 1969, she still holds the Blue Riband for fastest transatlantic crossing in both directions - a record she took from the RMS Queen Mary on her maiden voyages by averaging roughly 35 knots!! SS United States completed 800 transatlantic crossings before being withdrawn from service. Since 1969, she has been laid up in Norfolk, VA, Turkey, and Philadelphia before being towed to Mobile for plans to be sunk in the Gulf.

I didn't get the chance to see the ship before the funnels were removed, but nonetheless the SS United States still has an incredible awe about her, and being able to get up close and gaze at a majestic piece of history from both trackside and from the water aboard the Perdido Queen was a special privilege and made the Alabama heat bearable!!

A scene no longer seen

Popular even up to a decade ago, the McDonnell Douglas MD80 series aircraft could be frequently found flying in and out of Logan Airport, but fast forward to the present and no major carrier flies the Mad Dogs anymore. Only a small handful of airlines and charter companies continue to fly the iconic aircraft from the 1980s, and those numbers continue to decline. Any Mad Dog left is a treat to see!!
Olympia Aviation operated the last remaining MD81 in the USA, flying the aircraft for the Detroit Lions and Tigers. Since this photo was taken, a Boeing 737 has taken over the charter duties and the MD81 has been retired from service, leaving roughly 25 active MD80 series aircraft left active in the United States
