What a week! Our documentary “A NAME AND A PLACE // Bir İsim ve Bir Yer” had its premiere at the @istanbulfilmfestivali_ taking part in the National Documentary Competition. A year ago I picked up my camera at an unusual occasion; at a close gathering after my grandfather’s funeral. My family, being used to seeing me with a camera at hand, didn’t protest at the fact that I was documenting a very sensitive, private day. The reason why I started recording was not the sadness, but the joy and memories that were coming up.  My grandmother’s best friend prepared the Irmik Halva. Traditionally, a semolina dessert is roasted and served to those who come to condolences on the same day and everyone is in charge of roasting the halva.  It is believed that the smell that comes out during roasting nourishes the soul of the dead, and the halva itself nourishes the living.   Thus, I recorded each person stir that pot and say their goodbyes. The camera, my emotional shield, making me more of an observer than a participator. Hence my mourning came through completing this little film. I won’t share more than snippets here but I still wanted to share, and let go of that day. by @se_bon
