My sweet Baby Dog ❤️

It has been 3 weeks since I had to had to say goodbye to my best friend and soulmate, Kai. For someone who is quite verbose, I’m struggling to find words as putting them to paper confirms one of my greatest fears and biggest heartbreak of my life. Kai was my heart and soul and although she’s gone from this earthly realm, I know she lives on in every part of me.

Coming into my life like a lightning bolt, she lived each day with more grit and gusto than a million warriors combined. She tested me and taught me so much about unconditional love. Kai was my mirror, my protector, and confidant. Above all, she was a true best friend and when I looked into her eyes, I could feel how much she loved me with every bone in my body.

We battled a lot in life together the last 13.5 years and no matter what was thrown at us, we had each other. I physically carried her and she emotionally carried me - that was our deal. When she was diagnosed with cancer in late 2022, my world stopped but she showed me the way and her bravery gave us an extra 1,154 days together after her amputation. That’s 23% of her life that she lived with even more tenacity, sheer will, and commitment to showing up for us as an inseparable pair.

In her time here, she’s inspired so many from families navigating canine cancer to strangers we met walking down the street with her happily riding in her wagon. She never wavered - stoic and dedicated until the very end. I couldn’t be more proud of her and completely in awe of her strength.

I firmly believe Kai and I were destined for each other. She loved me so fiercely, even when I had a difficult time loving myself. Our bond is more than I could have ever dreamed or wished for.

My heart is truly shattered and I’m not sure it will ever fully repair but I’m okay with that in a way - it’s proof that the deepest love exists and despite us being apart, it will never, ever fade. She’s a part of me and I believe without a doubt we will be reunited in Heaven.

Happy anniversary @cliff_kelly ❤️

This last year has been wonderful at times and incredibly difficult at times. And you are there for us through it all. We are so lucky to have you (even though you’re outnumbered!) and we love you so, so much.

There are people who come into your life and leave an immediate imprint on your heart. Bonnie is one of those very special people in my life. We met 7 years ago during a @castingforrecovery retreat and I had the honor of being her river helper. I immediately knew we were in for a fun day because Bonnie has a witty sense of humor and a warmth about her. Bonnie’s bravery and strength are so admirable - cancer stood no chance!

Over the years, we have stayed in touch, periodically catching up about life, dogs, and all the things in between. When Kai was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, Bonnie and her wife, Marie, immediately sprung to action helping to connect me with oncology resources. With their guidance and encouragement, I was able to work a phenomenal oncology team who ultimately saved Kai’s life.

Bonnie is quite the master crafter and created a very special tribute book to Kai, along with a stunning wood-burned memory box, to keep her collar and special items in. The kindness Bonnie and Marie have extended me, in one of the hardest times of my life, will be forever treasured and appreciated.

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to reconnect with Bonnie in-person, finally meet Marie, and share a lovely conversation with their two close friends, Wendy and Patty. We shared laughs, some tears, hugs and a promise that we will get back on the water together very soon, regardless of catching fish or not, we’ll definitely have a great time!

Thank you Bonnie and Marie for being in my corner and allowing me to be in yours. I hold this friendship tightly to my heart and look forward to more visits in the future! ♥️ by @sea2sage

The 2026 Schmoots Clooper Invitational was one for the books! This was my first year attending (this was the ninth year!) and I had an absolute blast! The Clooper and carp community is so welcoming and passionate about the species, willing to share information, and they know how to have a great time!

Thank you to my dear friend @worthwadingfor for including me and showing me the ropes of carp land. These fish are so fun to target, technical, picky, and scratch the saltwater/sight fishing itch. Your friendship means the world to me and I’m so glad we got to make this trip together!

Getting to see friends like @troutpsychology @scuds.mackenzie @jeremiahsuperspey @bwalkercush and make new ones was so special - it really is all about the hang!

A huge thank you to our host with the most, @bill.marts. Your kindness and willingness to impart your knowledge on all of us is so generous. You are a true gem of a human!

From 7 am tequila shots, to Mylar balloon finding missions, bass stealing our flies from carp, gnarly wind, long hot days, hundreds of miles in the truck, to watching the sun go down over the A La Cozy in the company of good people, it was a phenomenal weekend and I can’t wait to run it back in 2027.

And obviously - Kacey and I have to defend our titles for smallest carp and smallest bass!

Kicking off my favorite season of the year with a family river day. We are so fortunate to live in an area with so many options and species to fish for. I love including the dogs where we can as they can run and explore, leaving us all with full hearts.

Full circle moment ✨

In 2008, I traveled to the Keys for the first time with my family. My dad has been an avid tarpon angler for decades and I had the special opportunity of getting a glimpse into his world, including meeting his dear friend Capt. Bruce Chard. I’ll never forget the day of running around on the flats in search of tarpon, totally mesmerized by their beauty and a bit fearful of their size. Bruce rigged up a spin rod with a crab and I had my first tarpon encounter, gaining a small sliver of understanding around why my dad was so captivated by these fish.

Over the almost 20 years since that day with my dad and Bruce, I’ve forged my own love affair for tarpon. It’s maddening at times and being highly critical of myself, I’m frequently picking apart my casting, presentation, and all the things. From my perspective, there is nothing easy about this and each time I step on the bow, it’s a learning opportunity.

But this day, it all came together and I am still pinching myself - I feel truly blessed to have had this experience. After a tough week of 20 mph winds, poor visibility, and limited opportunities, we found this beautiful gal in the bottom of the 9th.

Being able to share this experience with Bruce and learn from his decades of expertise is absolutely priceless. My dad and Tracey were in BJ Chard’s skiff and were able to come join us as we landed her which is a dream come true to share this with my family. Cliff kept me calm(ish) and safe while we navigated knotted lines, sargassum grass, a plastic bag on my line, an 8’ hammerhead at the bow… all of the crazy variables that make this experience that much more special.

It’s important to remember those who imparted their knowledge and time on you to become a better angler. And most of all, it’s about family - the ones you’re related to and the ones you choose. This was one heck of a Family Day!

Thank you @chardflyfishing for everything - especially the 30+ years of friendship you’ve given us. Thank you to my dad and Tracey for the generosity of this experience, to @cliff_kelly for always supporting me and not letting me fall off the boat!

And just like that, our sweet Sun Buns is ONE! ✨🎉

This little ray of sunshine has brought so much light and love into our lives. She lives up to her name, shining brightly and bringing so much joy wherever she goes.

Losing Kai has been truly one of the most difficult experiences of my life and the grief still hangs terribly heavy over my heart. But there is no doubt in my mind that Kai brought Sunny to us with a purpose to love us beyond measure, heal our hearts, and provide us with another special soul to nurture and share adventures with. Sunny is a very special girl and she takes her job of being the life of the party very seriously! And she carries on a piece of Kai’s legacy in their shared bloodlines. Sunny is uniquely herself and once again, we hit the lottery with another beautiful pup.

From her playful antics to loud singing voice, snuggle sessions to very serious bird stalking missions, car rides and river runs, she has seamlessly fit in with our family.

Thank you to @cliff_kelly for caving into my incessant pressure about bringing the cute dog with the bottle of Weller home every after you repeatedly told me no ❤️ And thank you to our dear friends @centraloregonsportingdog and @amanda.l.26 for pairing us with another love our lives - Sunny was meant to be in our family and orbit.

My mother is my best friend, protector, cheerleader, shoulder, voice of reason, and I don’t know what I would do without her ❤️

She’s held my hand through decades, supporting my dreams and loving me through some extremely difficult days. I cannot thank her enough for the love and devotion she dedicated to us, especially these last few years as we waded through Kai’s health journey.

This picture means so much to me as she’s the one who loved us through it all, showing me what unconditional love and compassion means. She set the standard for what it takes to love your way through it.

Although I’m not a human mom, I take the role of dog mom (and auntie to my Godchildren) with the utmost honor. Kai showed me that I’m capable of mothering, that love has no end, and I have a maternal instinct. She taught me how to be a mom in a way and I’ll be grateful to her for the rest of my days. I get to share that love with Sunny and Juney while she looks after all of us. 🪽
