There isn’t much on my bucket list but napping with a gigantic turtle on my head in the mid-morning sun was the win I never knew I needed. After ten years I finally learned to sleep while baby sleeps 😂 Anyone want to tell him it’s ok to sleep in past 4:30? Anyone????

went to college, Mom, not another solar system 😭

Would’ve loved to pass down my sprawling My Little Pony collection, but ANYWAY…

As we prepare to move house I’m over here staring at every tiny DIY Barbie dress and handwritten note like 👁️👄👁️

So seriously are we keeping it all? A few special things? Becoming the storage unit? I definitely err on the side of keep it because I know my daughter (like most kids?) love small, special things that might seem unimportant to others. I don’t know. Maybe I’m overthinking things 🤷‍♀️

I struggled with severe, cystic acne as a teen.
I was so excited to be invited to prom as a sophomore, and I had my makeup done at the mall with my friend.

The woman applying it made a “tsk-tsk” sound with her tongue, and I remember smiling up at her.

“You could be so beautiful,” she said. “It’s a shame there are so many ugly pimples.”

That was over 20 years ago, and those words still make my stomach sink.

After that, I wanted nothing to do with anything on my face. It all felt too heavy, and I was convinced nothing would look good anyway.

I used to LOVE playing with makeup. For a while, I even wanted to make makeup artistry my career.

Now I’m 41, with three kids including a busy toddler and I’m ready to have fun with makeup again. Of course, my skin is different now, too, and I’m completely out of practice.

How I wish I could tell first-time-mommy-me eleven years ago that this was the bottom of the barrel for therapists.

I’ll never forget the way she smirked when I told her I didn’t feel like eating. “At least you’re skinny!” she said.

“Eat an apple and exercise, and if that doesn’t work, touch base if it gets bad.”

I will *never* forget that feeling as I made my way back to the car after my appointment, the baby stirring as my car seat carrier banged against my hip. My had asked to take the baby during the appointment but my anxiety wouldn’t allow it.

I hadn’t even processed my traumatic birth that very nearly left my husband without a wife and baby. She didn’t even ask me for details when I told her.

The sadness burns behind my nose when I think of how utterly lost I was. I’d made that appointment *before* giving birth - that was me KNOWING how PPD may take hold - and it did - and that’s the help I received. I knew then that I, alongside my husband - WE - were very much alone.

I hope this post has found its way to a mother who needs it. If you’re dragging through this day, or this thirteenth midnight feeding - it does get better, but that doesn’t mean it happens overnight or without the right help.

For me, that help was an antidepressant and the support of my husband and other moms online. And, eventually, exercise… but it was part of a formula and not the solution.

If you’ve suffered or are currently struggling with mental health postpartum, or know a new mom who is outwardly struggling or maybe seems a little too “together” - make sure they know you’re there. Often, we mistake silence for coping, when underneath there is a world of hurt. Gosh, I hope you know you’re going to be okay.
