The Rhapsody of the Seas sailed on Monday from Haifa, on its way to Cyprus, carrying Americans evacuating Israel.

The Royal Caribbean International cruise ship was sailing on the request of the U.S. embassy in Israel.

“Royal Caribbean Group is actively supporting the U.S. Department of State in the assisted departure of American citizens,” said a statement from Royal Caribbean.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) is a government body responsible for monitoring and regulating private recruitment agencies in the Philippines. The POEA was designed to make sure that Filipino crewmembers are able to have some type of remedy if and when they become injured on the job. While this is certainly an admirable basis for the POEA, it has been monstrously distorted by the world’s major cruise lines. Instead of the POEA being a tool to make sure that Filipino citizens can make a recovery, it is a tool used by ALL the major cruise lines to dramatically limit any responsibility for when Filipino crewmembers become ill or injured.

Did you know, the Jones Act entitles crewmembers and seafarers to Maintenance and Cure, which is the right to have your employer pay for medical care and provide you with a daily living wage if you suffer an accident or injury onboard a vessel? Maintenance and Cure must be provided to you, regardless of who is at fault. A seafarer whose employer does not follow their full obligation under Maintenance and Cure may also be awarded punitive damages for the failure.

For the 2023 season, Vancouver is expecting a record 334 ship calls, most of which are homeported, according to Mandy Chan, manager of cruise services for the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

The port’s previous best year was in 2019 with 1.1 million passenger visits. The 2022 season ran from April 10, with Holland America Line’s Koningsdam being the first ship call, until November 2, with the last sailing of the Crown Princess.

On November 17, both Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line reactivated their mask policies for Coral Princess, Majestic Princess, Grand Princess, Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa, all of which are based in Australia and New Zealand. Royal Caribbean International is also now requiring passengers to wear masks on Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas, which are also sailing Down Under.
