Hi, I'm Steffie and here's a reintroduction for old friends and new...

The Isle of Wight is the place to begin. The marine environment has been my playground from an early age (a salt-soaked childhood spent at the beach), a fieldwork location (my undergraduate dissertation on Solent Sea Breezes), a workplace (dinghy instructing and mapping the seabed off the Needles), and a home (a daily bike commute following the river Medina in all moods of weather). My personal geography is as unique to this land as my DNA.

My artistic story is told through Earth History and Ocean Science. A degree in Marine Geography, Masters’ in Applied Marine Science and a later, personal passion for prehistoric archaeology come together to influence my work.

Incorporating written work, particularly creative non-fiction, also plays a key part in what I do.

Bringing together layers of research, ceramic and written responses to complex processes or vast spans of time is where I find the intersection of art, environment and geography-geek joy. This soothes my sensitive soul like nothing else.

I've built this little community over the past few years, in between my day-job as a teacher. In a world that can seem dark, overwhelming and hopeless at times - Sea Fever Ceramics is a little cove of light, earth-magic, creativity and friendship.

Wild clay slip!

Here are the results if my wild clay slip after first firing. Isn't it fascinating how that blue-grey 'blue slipper' as we Islanders call it goes that rich brown after bisque firing?

I collected two colours of wild clay - a grey-blue and a black, but they ended up the same colour.

I've layered quite a few different glazes on in the 3rd photo as well as clear glaze that will allow the final colours of the slip to shine through.

I can't wait to see the final result!
