I’ve learned so much this year and yet I stand before you a beginner.

Every day I wake up and get blasted by the firehose of self-inquiry. How to be a better dad, how to show up for people I love, how to avoid the pit of despair (making progress!), how to love myself (ongoing), how to work toward the life I want to live, how to let go of knowing how.

I have a stack of full punch cards from the burst your heart wide open shop, and with each punch I feel one step closer to free. I walked with monks looking for answers that only led to more questions. I got a tattoo that says “don’t die” and what it means is “be reborn again and again!” I’ve held space for horror, joy, and renewal. I’ve changed my mind countless times after acquiring new information. I’ve made so many mistakes and I will make so many more. What a gift! I’ve forgiven myself, blamed myself, and forgiven myself again. I found god in a breathwork session and the devil on a dance floor. I’ve been awed and detached, pulled apart and put back together, often by nothing more than a tiny thread of conviction that it will all be worth it. I’ve become a heart surgeon. I’ve healed my inner teenager who almost ended this life for us both and borne witness to folks who died because their suffering was too much to bear. Hear hear.

But hear me out here, what if this is it? The agony and the joy, the paradox of it all. There are no enlightened beings, only enlightened actions. Each day, each moment, each thought brings a choice. I choose my daughters. I choose my wife. I choose you. I choose myself. I choose to be a beginner. The humble servant of my own unknowing. What a choice!

Another earth return for all of my selves and thank you for being in service to the truth, may we continue forth in search of it.

Conviction

might be the thread pulling us all back to the training blocks, the break of dawn runs, the pissing rain workouts wondering if the dream chasing is worth the extreme chafing, dragging exhausted feet onto a treadmill after a day of parenting-work-parenting, the endless winter sickness that peppered neighborhood streets with snot and blood, the self-doubt of a 36-year-old dad of two looking in the mirror wondering what are you even doing, the endless spousal time management negotiations, the hundred times you wanted to quit/throw up/give up, the fear that even if you did the thing would it make you happy? no it won’t because then there’s the next thing and the next thing but maybe all along it was the belief that it mattered to you

maybe that was the conviction that pushed you to lace up the damn shoes time and time again

which pushed open the gates of fear and allowed the possibility of what if to emerge

and that led you to the starting line to stand tall knowing

it was never about the end result

but proving your conviction right

—

Thank you @hilseags the forever bedrock of my conviction

Thank you @meeerunner @anaruncoaching for making me feel like a real runner

Thank you Nell & Gem, your joy reverberated in my head throughout

It’s World Premiere week @sxsw for our feature doc @thelifeweleavefilm !

A crew of dedicated people poured a good portion of their hearts into this film. Not to mention all the people behind the scenes: spouses - lookin’ at you @hilseags - caregivers, friends offering support and keeping the boat afloat. Making a film is often a confusing slog toward an amorphous finish line, but in this case the finish line is Friday night in Austin, TX. I hope you’ll join us if you’re at the festival or look out for news regarding more screenings coming soon!

"Maybe I was trying to prove to myself that I was strong enough, or that I’m a good father, or that by seeing me do hard things, Nelly will internalize that she can too."

During the Seattle Marathon this past November, Kyle Seago (@seagsees) spent 26.2 miles pushing his daughter, Nelly, in a stroller he scored for $75 on the app.

Kyle put those wheels to work, ultimately raising more than TRIPLE his fundraising goal for @westsidebabysea — a local organization that provides essential supplies to families in need.

Sometimes a local find is just a good deal. Sometimes, it’s part of something unforgettable. Kyle Seago running in the Seattle Marathon, wearing a numbered race bib and a cap. He's pushing a stroller with a his daughter, Nelly, inside. Kyle's expression is excited and pumped, looking at the camera. A scenic view with trees and a bridge is visible in the background. by @seagsees

For the better part of 4 years, I’ve been collaborating with @jjgerbertv to bring a feature film about human composting (aka Terramation) to life. I’ve always been fascinated by the way we approach death in this country and once I heard that an innovative new form of deathcare was emerging, the wheels started turning.

We witnessed the transformation of a warehouse in Auburn from a blank slate to a space full of deep reverence, hope, and regeneration. We sat in rooms with people as they openly grieved their loved ones. We observed the reverent care of deceased children and elders and witnessed how this new approach to deathcare can truly transform the grief process and comfort those left behind.

I am forever changed by the process of making this film and am grateful it has found an audience at @sxsw . Deep gratitude to JJ and everyone who has had a hand in bringing this film to life. It was a huge undertaking, but it is a story that deserves telling.

When I told her I was going to try and run a marathon pushing my daughter in a stroller, my therapist asked me what I hoped to get out of the run. I told her I didn’t know, but I just felt like I had to try. Maybe I was trying to prove to myself that I was strong enough, or that I’m a good father, or that by seeing me do hard things Nelly will internalize that she can too. I still don’t really know what drove me to do it, but I’m so grateful I let that feeling—and some incredible luck—guide us all the way across the finish line of the @seattlemarathon last Sunday.

There was was an indescribable magic in running through my hometown streets, the streets I used to traverse on the 44 bus listening to Blue Scholars, the parks in which I first fell in love, the hidden corners I would escape to when I first experienced the dark creeping hands of depression, the schools and bars where I met my closest friends and eventually my wife. The views I’ve looked out at for decades but now, as a father running gleefully with his daughter, I see in a new light. As the miles passed, I made peace with the idea that I will never be my old self but my old self, scars and all, will always be me. And maybe that’s what I was searching for all along: a way to remind myself that facing hard things head on leads to the greatest joy, especially when you get a flat tire at mile 14…

The whole race I felt so grateful for the inherent privilege in getting to do this with my daughter, which is why we wanted to try and raise funds for other kiddos in our region. Through the generosity of so many folks and thanks to a 200% Giving Tuesday match, we were able to raise over $7,000 for @westsidebabysea that will go directly toward supporting families 🫶🏻

Thank you.
Thank you running.
Thank you resilient body.
Thank you patient Nelly.
Thank you mom for getting us to the starting line.
Thank you @wsusteve for the emergency tire pump.
Thank you @richnotdick for photo #1, @thisisdizzle for photos #2-3, @zoe.b.alexander for photo #4, and @buttergreggles for the video and the relentless cheering. taken in Seattle, Washington by @seagsees

Well, it’s as good a time as any to make it official…

In a week’s time, Nelly and I (and our trusty chariot we got for $75 on offerup) will be running the @seattlemarathon . This has been a longtime dream of mine and since we’re nearing the end of our stroller run window, there ain’t nothing to it but to do it!

To celebrate the miles we’ve shared, we’re also raising money for @westsidebabysea - an amazing organization that provides vital services and supplies for families in need. From diapers to formula to car seats, they do it all and are literally saving lives.

Our goal is $2,000 and we’re encouraging donations in increments of $26.2. You can donate directly to Westside Baby (put “in honor of Nelly” on your donation) or Venmo me @ kyle-seago and I will make sure all funds are delivered. We’re kicking it off with a donation of $524.

Thanks so much for your support and we hope to see you out on the course next Sunday, 11/30! taken in Seattle, Washington by @seagsees

I have no living sources to cite, but I do believe this to be the only life we are given. Thus, we walk the winding path knowing who we once were and wondering until the end who we will become. It is an indescribable miracle we are here to begin with and me at the same time as you! A gift we get to unwrap with each waking day.

Half a lifetime ago I saw through different eyes. I believed there to be no path in front of me, at least not one rid of pain and sadness.

I am here, 36 rotations in, to tell you that the pain and sadness persists! But it is the joy, the wonder and the light, the fellowship and the growth, the understanding and the resilience that is worth living for. If not for yourself then to light the way for those you love and cherish so that they may see the path ahead and develop the resilience to walk through the darkness and bask in the pockets of light.

We owe everything to the mystery, may we all live in it forever. by @seagsees

Some days the world moves so fast and some days everything comes to a complete standstill.

Gemma Eve Seago arrived with the sun Saturday morning. We’re so grateful to our doctors and nurses for their loving care and we’re over the moon to see who this little human becomes.

Growing up with a Deaf father, it was instilled in me that any limitations we place on disabled folks are, in truth, the fault of a world that has chosen progress over accessibility.

My dad could do anything and being outdoors was where he found freedom. I can trace a direct line between the adventures we had in the wild when I was growing up and the sense of freedom I eventually found in running.

After I met @ixch.13 and was introduced to guiding vision-impaired runners (VIPs), I was reminded that accessibility is not a choice, but an action. For Global Running Day, I got the opportunity to guide my new friend @jaybird80, a runner who is deafblind. This full circle moment brought back memories of seeing my dad navigate a world that wasn’t designed for him with determination and tenacity (and a bit of indignation).

Jay graciously gave me tips on guiding him and once we got comfortable, we got to let loose. I haven’t had that much fun running in a long time. We laughed a lot, especially about my signal to him (running behind me) to move to the right, which could easily have been mistaken for me signaling a fart.

Thank you @free2fly_rc for bringing me to guiding and making it clear to me that we must act to create the world we wish to live in.

And thanks, Pops, for being you.
