A dog is sleeping peacefully in the view of the Caucasus mountains by Jvari Monastery in Georgia. It’s a 6th century Georgian Orthodox Monastery built on a mountain top above Georgia’s ancient capital - Mtskheta. In my story, you can see me hiking up to the monastery, then turning to see the view of Mtskheta located at the meeting point of two mountain rivers - Kura and Aragvi.

But about the dog! Georgia is a country of many wonders, but one of the things that struck me is that the cities are full of happy, healthy, very friendly dogs that seem to live in the streets. I looked it up, and it turned out to be not a coincidence, of coyrse. Georgia has a thorough program to care for its street dogs. Each dog is picked up snd brought to a vet for examination. The vet neuters and vaccinates the dog, treats any health issues, gives the dog medication for flee prevention, etc. The dog stays in the clinic until full recovery. Then, then dog is given a tag in the ear that makes it easy to track the dog’s vaccinations and health history in a centralized system. And then - my favorite part - the dog is released on the same spot where it was picked up. Thus, the dog continues living in the community, with the neighbors who love him, and he’s happy and healthy.

I think this program is one of the most inspiring accomplishments of human civilization. Caring for creatures who live alongside us, collectively, as a society.

This is the Narikala Fortress in Tbilisi, Georgia, in the Caucasus mountains between the Black & the Caspian seas. There’s been a fortress on this spot since the 4th century, the times of the Iberian kingdom. Archeological finds show much older civilizations here, though. The 4th Millenium BC and such. Basically, people have lived here since they started moving north from Africa.

To be honest, it’s hard to take in this enormity of human history that’s manifested right in front of me. Does it ever happen to you? I’m walking around in a daze.

The Black Sea is warm and wonderful on October 1 on the coast of magical ancient Georgia, in the charming old city of Batumi. And here’s my controversial take: pebble beaches are nicer than sand ones, because the sand doesn’t get everywhere, and the water remains clear. I know it’s an unpopular opinion! No AI - the sunrise really paints Chicago pink. The city faces east, the sun rises from Lake Michigan, and the first rays really color the skyline this warm hue. After a few minutes, after the suns rises some more, the color shifts to golden. Then to the regular daytime bright. But I was there right at sunset (7:38 am that day), shivered in the morning cold on the embankment between the planetarium and the aquarium, and caught the first moment the rays of Sun touch the city. taken in Chicago, Illinois, USA by @seagulls.waves

There’s a spot on the north shore, next to the Montrose bird sanctuary, where you can see Chicago above the lake, as if approaching it by boat. I take all the visitors there. On a warm summer evening, that stretch of the shore is full of people running, biking, playing volleyball, walking dogs, or picnicing. Summer Chicago at its best. And Lake Michigan looks like an ocean with its choppy waves on a windy day taken in Chicago by @seagulls.waves

Just discovered this gorgeous beach just North of La Jolla, where I usually spend my time walking around, swimming, and watching sea lions while in San Diego. It’s Scripps beach. I walked it to the edge, where the orange cliffs meet the sea. Went for a swim, too. It’s not a protected cove, but the surf is gentler than at other beaches. Walking around the Marais in Paris, sat down in the shade in a garden, then noticed a church behind the trees. A side door happened to be unlocked, so I went inside and found myself in the middle of an organ recital. On a random hour on Tuesday, it was probably just the organ player practicing. It turned out to be the 15th-century St-Gervais-et-St-Protais Church, whose facade is the earliest example of the French baroque in Paris. taken in Paris, France by @seagulls.waves
