Day 2: The Selfie Tradition
As we’ve made memories together, we’ve also started a few traditions that are uniquely ours. Our favorite is something we like to call the “Selfie Tradition.” It’s simple, but it means the world to us—wherever we go, we make sure to capture a moment of me kissing Marylee on the cheek in a super cool location.
This tradition started in Iceland, with a volcanic eruption in the background and most recently snapped one here in Switzerland. It’s been a fun way to document our adventures ever since. We’ve found hundreds of moments to snap these selfies, each one representing a special place, a shared laugh, or just a quiet moment of love.
This Reel is just a glimpse—50ish of those moments—but it represents our continuous adventure together. No matter where life takes us, we’ll always have this little tradition to remind us of all the incredible places we’ve been and the love that’s carried us through it all.

Day 3: Gratitude for Friends and Family

As our wedding day draws near, Marylee and I are filled with immense gratitude for the incredible friends and family who have supported us throughout our journey. Your love and encouragement have meant the world to us, and we want to take a moment to acknowledge some of the amazing people who are making this day so special.

First, I want to give a huge shoutout to my best friend Scott, who has been by my side since the 3rd grade. Scott is not only officiating our wedding, but he’s also been a constant source of support and laughter throughout my life. I couldn’t imagine this day without him.

To my sister Lisa, thank you for being the team lead with our kids, ensuring they’re taken care of and for handling the logistics of flying them home. Your dedication and love for our family mean everything to me.

Parker, we are so grateful to you for capturing our Swiss wedding with your incredible photography skills. We’re especially excited for the photos in the Italian Dolomites later on—those memories will be cherished forever.

To Marylee’s crew of besties, thank you for keeping her life fun and exciting, and to my close group of guy friends who have been there for me through thick and thin, I appreciate you more than words can express.

Finally, a special note of gratitude to all who helped us get here at home and the amazing people who are flying out to Switzerland to share this special moment with us. The amount of effort, time, and cost you’ve put into being here with us touches us beyond words. Your presence means the world to us, and we are so lucky to have you in our lives.

Day 4: The Switzerland Adventure

As we count down to our wedding day, I want to share the story of our family’s journey to Switzerland—an adventure filled with excitement, a few unexpected hiccups, and plenty of unforgettable moments.

Our crew of 8 all flew to Zurich together. Organizing and getting everyone on the plane was a bit of a mission, but it was a lot of fun, and everyone did great. The excitement of traveling together set the tone for what was to be an incredible trip.

But as soon as we landed in Zurich, we hit our first snag. While everyone managed to get their bags, the bride-to-be wasn’t so lucky. Marylee’s checked luggage, meticulously packed with all her outfits and supplies for the wedding week, didn’t make it! Of all the people!!!

Despite the luggage drama, there were some cool moments too. I got to walk around Zurich by myself early in the morning, taking in the calm Swiss streets and later going to Marylee’s Google Zurich office for lunch. Later that day her bag arrived! While Marylee and I retrieved it from the airport, the rest of the crew took the train to Gstaad. It was everyone’s first time navigating the European train system, and they did great—though I heard they took one wrong train and almost ended up in Italy! That would have been quite the detour! Marylee and I headed to Gstaad with a quick pit stop in Thun.

When we arrived at the Huus Hotel in Gstaad, we were blown away by our wedding suite. It’s basically a small apartment adorned with rose petals and chocolates, with a breathtaking view of the Alps. The next day, a few of us took a beautiful gondola ride to the top of Rinderberg, where we soaked in the stunning views and enjoyed lunch. It was such a special experience to share with our kids, and it made the trip even more memorable.

Day 5: Embracing Interdependence

As we get closer to our wedding day, I want to talk about something that’s been both a challenge and a rewarding growth experience in our relationship: becoming interdependent.

Interdependence is a balance between being independent—knowing how to meet your own needs—and being willing to rely on your partner for support. It’s about recognizing that while we are strong individuals, our relationship is strongest when we work together, leaning on each other in both the good times and the tough ones.

One of the challenges Marylee and I face is that we’re both really good at being independent. We know how to take care of ourselves, meet our own needs, and get things done. This independence is a strength, but it also means that it’s not always easy to invite the other person in to help out. We’re both more than happy to help each other, but asking for help—letting go of that independence—can sometimes be the hard part.

For me personally, I’ve always found great joy in helping others, but it’s been harder to accept help in return. It took me a long time to realize that by not accepting help, I was robbing others of the same joy I felt when helping them. Now, it’s a conscious effort to find opportunities to ask for and receive help, knowing that it strengthens our relationship.

In September, we took a big step by merging our families into a single house of six. Let me tell you, there was a lot to figure out, from blending routines to managing shared spaces. But ultimately, we found plenty of opportunities to lean on each other, and that’s where interdependence really began to shine in our lives.

Embracing interdependence has deepened our connection and made us stronger as a couple. It’s taught us that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of trust and love. And as we prepare to start this next chapter of our lives together, I’m grateful for the balance we’ve found in each other.

Day 6: Parenting as a Team

As we count down to our wedding day, I want to reflect on one of the most important aspects of our lives—our roles as parents. Together, Marylee and I have the incredible responsibility of raising our four amazing kids, whose ages range from 10 to 20. It’s a journey we approach with love, commitment, and teamwork.

Parenting isn’t always easy, but having Marylee by my side makes all the difference. We’ve learned to embrace our differences, understanding that our unique perspectives help us provide the best for our children. Whether it’s navigating challenges or celebrating victories, we lean on each other, always striving to be the best parents we can be.

Marylee’s strength, independence, and adventurous spirit are qualities that she inherited from her mother, Kathy. Kathy’s influence on Marylee has shaped her into the fiercely loving and resilient woman she is today. Marylee speaks of her mom often, with deep love but also sadness. It’s clear that Kathy’s presence is still very much alive in her heart. One of the reasons we chose August 24th for our wedding date is because it’s Kathy’s birthday—a meaningful way to honor her memory.

For me personally, I feel a sadness that I never had the opportunity to meet Kathy. I’m grateful that my mom is in my life, and it brings me so much joy to hear how much she loves Marylee. It’s a reminder of the importance of family and the connections that shape us.

Together, Marylee and I have created a home filled with love, support, and the kind of partnership that helps our children thrive. I’m so grateful for the way we complement each other in this journey, always putting our kids first and working together to guide them as they grow. Our family is our greatest joy, and I couldn’t imagine doing this without Marylee by my side.

Day 7: Shared Interests

Marylee and I share so many passions and interests that have deepened our connection over the years. Both of us have roots in Hawaii—me from Maui and Marylee from Oahu—so we have a natural love for the Aloha spirit, being by the ocean, and visiting the islands whenever we can.

We’re both avid yoga practitioners, and I also teach yoga. Whenever Marylee takes my class, I always feel extra cool. Lately, I’ve even managed to embarrass her in front of the class by talking about our upcoming wedding and how much I love her!

When it comes to food, we both love to eat and cook. We take pride in making beautiful and delicious meals together. While we enjoy healthy eating with lots of salads and veggies, we also have a serious weakness for tacos, chips, and guac—Pablo y Pablo in Wallingford is our absolute favorite spot.

Our love for the mountains, hiking, and getting into nature is another bond we share. We both have a passion for photography, though I’ll admit, Marylee is far more talented than I am.

We’ve both worked in tech for large portions of our careers, and while we appreciate the opportunities it provides, we also know all too well the sacrifices of time and stress it demands.

Traveling is a shared passion that has taken us around the world and inspired us to get married in Switzerland and honeymoon in Italy. See the Day 9 post for more details on that.

We share a deep love for our friends and family. We cherish spending time with them, always supporting each other to go be with friends. We’ve become great at getting to know each other’s friends, strengthening our bond with the people we care about.

We pour our hearts into raising our children. Watching them grow and helping them discover who they are is one of our greatest joys. Together, we have four amazing kids—wild, right?

We both love starting our mornings by the fireplace, sipping coffee and smoothies, and we enjoy going on long walks to dinner, sometimes covering 4-5 miles round trip. We’re dedicated to always building intimacy, learning more about each other as we grow and change together.

Day 8: Our Ceremony (Part I)

Yesterday, Marylee and I took the first step in our wedding journey by having our civil ceremony in a beautiful elopement garden in Seattle. The last several weeks have been hectic with trips and kids, so we hadn’t had as much quality time together as usual. We decided to block out our afternoon to focus on each other. Since we both love yoga, we started with a noon class led by one of our favorite teachers, Patrick. Afterward, we enjoyed lunch and prepared for the ceremony. I’ve been eager to wear a blue suit I purchased recently, and Marylee bought a beautiful dress to match. We looked at ourselves in the mirror with big smiles—we were excited.

We drove to the elopement garden and met our small crew. I’d like to call out my best friend Scott first. Scott and I have been best friends since the 3rd grade. Marylee suggested he officiate, and I absolutely loved the idea. Scott has been there for me through the highs and lows, and I’m beyond grateful for his friendship and his enthusiasm to be a special part of our wedding. He’ll also be performing our ceremony in Switzerland next week, and I can’t wait for it.
Next, I’d like to acknowledge the dads, Grandpa Jeff and Grandpa Jay, who served as our witnesses. We’re so grateful they could be there with us.

We were also joined by our dear friends Kelsey and Parker, both incredibly talented photographers and all-around amazing people. Kelsey captured our elopement, which we’ll share at another time. Parker will be capturing our Switzerland wedding.

After the “I dos,” the pronouncement, the kiss, and the signing, we enjoyed sparkling wine, a picnic spread, a beautiful sunset, and great company. A bonus highlight was Grandpa Jay’s new puppy, Snapper, who brought smiles to everyone’s faces. It was a perfect evening.

Now, we’re beyond excited for Part II of our wedding next week in Switzerland!

Day 9: Adventures Together
As we continue the countdown to our wedding, I’m reminded of all the incredible adventures Marylee and I have shared. Here are a few highlights…

Hawaiian Islands
We’ve explored three Hawaiian islands, each with its own special connection to our families. In Maui, we visited my mom in Kihei and met our dear friends Malachi and Leanne in Lahaina on their sailboat. It was pure serendipity discovering it was Malachi’s birthday, turning our visit into an unexpected celebration. We’re so grateful for that experience before Lahaina tragically burned.
On Oahu, we celebrated my birthday at Haleiwa Joe’s and sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the car—a moment I’ll never forget. The beauty of the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden left us mesmerized. Recently, we visited my dad on the Big Island, enjoying the lush vegetation and heavy rain.

Pacific Northwest
Back home, we’ve gone on countless hikes in the North Cascades and Olympics. Frequent getaways to Anacortes have been romantic and restorative. These excursions have become a cherished part of our lives.

Switzerland
For my birthday, Marylee took me to Switzerland, her favorite place on the planet. We stayed at the Huus Hotel in Gstaad, explored Zermatt, and crossed the skybridge on Glacier 3000. It was a beautiful gift that deepened our connection.

Iceland
Surprising Marylee in Iceland for her birthday is one of my favorite memories. I pulled off an epic surprise at Kirkjufell waterfalls, and Marylee was so shocked, I think her brain broke! The most magical part was kissing her with a volcanic eruption in the background.

Yosemite
But of all our adventures, Yosemite holds the most special place in my heart. I let Marylee handle the logistics so I could fully enjoy the experience. It was during this trip that my love for her solidified, and I’ve been certain of it ever since.

Every journey with Marylee has been an adventure in love, partnership, and discovery. I can’t wait to see where life takes us next.
