My good friend, Chad Sammeth, passed away today. We shared incredible memories at the Cambodian Community in Long Beach. He was a community leader with a huge presence and was someone so inviting to meet with his big smile that made every event worth being because he was there. He fought a long battle with cancer, always being proactive in medical procedures while enjoying life to the fullest doing the things he loves most with those closest to him. My most recent encounter was wh he came to Long Beach from Chicago to attend the Cambodian Parade. He was the Grand Marshal of that event, had the pleasure of driving his car and see all his friends and family showing their love to him every block we drove down. That evening we had dinner at Michael’s in Naples with his partner and my Mom (Judy Seal). He told me his passion of fishing while I spoke about glassblowing. We’ve kept in touch updating on his health. Knowing he was going to pass soon, he shared his stories of perseverance and received so much prayer and positivity from his peers. It’s so hard to see someone so young who made a big impact on me, his family, friends and his community of support leave us so early in his life. I am thankful he can rest easy now. I am going to miss Chad very much and so honored to have known an inspiring human being as he was. by @sean_seal

Title: Education and Conformity

My culture involves a family history of educators and my experience having a learning impairment in elementary school through high school. When I was three weeks old, my parents, who were also educators in the Long Beach Unified School District, noticed that I was not breathing while I was sleeping, which became life threatening. They took me to the hospital for sleep tests and I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. My parents performed nightly chest compressions to keep my heart beating. This continued night after night resulting in me to be sleep deprived and affected my ability to learn as fast as my peers.

The iconic toy that most people grew up with to learn the primary shapes, the shape sorter, represents my educational journey. The square shapes represent the “gifted students,” the triangle shapes represent the “average students,” and the circle with the protruded wrap represent the “special students,” with various learning impairments.

The distance between the shapes represents the conformity of learning based on effective or “proven ways” of teaching topics that might be “easy” to some but a significant struggle for those with learning impairment(s) like those on the spectrum of autism, ADHD, mental retardation, dyslexia, the speech impaired and many more. The shapes closest together have no problem dropping in the box through the cut out of the squares and triangles. The circle has more difficulty passing through than the other shapes due to the added wrap around. The wrap is the learning impairment and the struggle I endured to learn topics that the other shapes had no trouble understanding.

Regardless of how frustrated I became, my mind developed a tendency of consistency, open-mindedness and thinking “outside the box.” I found hope in my understanding of topics being discussed in the classroom and I mastered them with the extra time I put in from hours researching and repetition. I developed habits that exceeded everyone’s expectations with my success of graduating from California State University of Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.
