Like most Texans, I can barely articulate my disapproval of the idiotic decision to build any kind of further infrastructure through the most austere region of the state without getting spitting mad.

Pic from a 2022 trip to Santa Elena Canyon, which is perhaps the most impenetrable physical land barrier that I’ve ever laid eyes on. It’s a thousand foot cliff.

The Piney Woods Express is one of the most unique train rides in Texas, offering a four-hour round trip between Palestine and Rusk through the forests of East Texas.

For this trip, we rode in Car 509, one of the railroad’s dome cars. The panoramic glass roof provides unobstructed views of the surrounding pine forests, making it one of the best ways to experience the route.

The ride also includes café service, and passengers in the dome car receive a complimentary snack tray. I paired mine with a Shiner because, as the saying goes, there’s nothing finer.

If you’re looking for a relaxing day trip or a different way to explore East Texas, the Texas State Railroad is well worth considering.

Built a bike rack for my truck for $15.

One 2x6. Some old stain. A part from Amazon. That’s it.

I’ve always liked understanding how things work, and I love to tinker. Cycling is like a choose your own adventure. Most parts are cheap. Maintenance is simple. You just need a little determination.

I’m doing more group rides lately as I train for the MS150 in April. This rack is part of that journey now.

Sometimes the best gear is the stuff you make yourself.

📍San Marcos, TX

At the headwaters of the San Marcos River, Spring Lake is fed by more than 200 artesian springs. There is evidence of human settlement in this area going back more than 12,000 years! It’s the longest continuously inhabited site in North America. Biological and archaeological research is ongoing.

The water stays 72-74 degrees year round and is home to seven threatened and endangered species.   Did you know that you can learn to scuba dive in Spring Lake?   It’s always been a goal of mine to learn, and I regret not taking the opportunity to learn when I was visiting the Great Barrier Reef, but what could be cooler than learning in one of Texas’ Sacred Springs??? taken in Spring Lake (Texas) by @seancronen

📍Toyahvale, Texas

Balmorhea State Park is home to one of the largest spring-fed swimming pools in the world, filled by the San Solomon Springs aquifer in the middle of the West Texas desert.

It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression, 1934-1941.

The water stays around 72–76°F year-round, making it an incredible place to swim and cool off, even when the surrounding desert is baking.

Look underwater and you’ll find the pool is home to several species of fish, including the endangered Comanche Springs pupfish and Pecos gambusia. You can see the Headwater Catfish in these clips, too!

It’s a pretty remarkable place: crystal-clear spring water, native wildlife, and thousands of gallons of water flowing through the desert every day.

It’s just like the springs we have in Central Texas, but in the middle of nowhere! Totally worth the detour if you’re out there. taken in Toyahvale, Texas by @seancronen

👻 I swear that I heard a voice out in the distance when I went to retrieve my camera from the dock at 2am.
I am not a superstitious person.

Caddo Lake is a crazy and wild place, unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. Feels ancient. Very interesting history.

Fun fact: Caddo Lake is Texas’ only natural lake!

📍Palo Duro Canyon, TX

Great views of the Milky Way galaxy from @dovesrestcabins this past weekend! The moon didn’t rise until early morning and the clouds were minimal.

It got super windy later at night, windy enough that my tripod was shaking slightly during the long exposures, leading to a few shaky frames. Sometimes that’s how it goes!
