What could be worse than your partner disappearing on a backpacking trip? Coming back, but different.

I wrote “The Cloud Forest” last year because I love horror. Fast forward to this fall and it’s coming out at a great horror publication on Halloween. It’s nice when things work out well… which is more than I can say for the backpacking trip that I put these poor characters through. More to come when it releases. by @seanycwrites

Nearly a year after I sent my story “In The Tower of the Ape God” to one of the coolest old school pulp sci-fi/horror mags, Schlock Magazine UK, it has finally been published (and I’m extra pleased to see that I’m featured on the cover!).

It’s about a teenager who accidentally summons an ancient being into his family’s suburban home in Playa del Rey, and what becomes of his life in the aftermath.

You can get the issue for free on Kindle unlimited, read it on their website this month, or buy a print copy on Amazon (link in bio). by @seanycwrites

"The story explores the seductive danger of nostalgia: how it distorts memory, masks grief, and tempts us to live in what’s already gone. At its core, though, it’s about alienated people finding each other in an ethereal moment they cannot hold onto, and how they cope with the fleeting nature of time, life, and the unknowable forces that bring us together and tear us apart."

#shortstory #anthology #IHMIHY Just This Once by Sean Cahill I remember stopping in my tracks, cocking my head, and staring in wonder at its blue neon sign: THE GLIMMER ROOM Above the name, a neon bottle tipped back and forth on a loop, endlessly pouring into the letter M, which was stylized to resemble a martini glass. I remember wondering how strange it was that I’d walked by here so many times and never noticed this place. I Haven’t Made It Home Yet: pwritersu.com/IHMIHY taken in Glimmer Room by @seanycwrites

I’m extremely honored to have my short story “Elephantine” featured in the spring 2026 issue of NYU’s Journal of Experimental Practice, available for free online here: https://wp.nyu.edu/artsampscience-journalofexperimentalpractice/spring-2026-issue/

The magazine’s goal is to publish “work that is daring in subject, craft, tone, and genre”. As a writer shopping a story about a woman who slowly turns into a rogue elephant after being dehumanized at work, I have to say I’m grateful a magazine championing such things exists. Bonus points because working with their editors was a great experience that I think strengthened the piece in all the right ways.

Be sure to check out the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Practice, and while you’re there, I hope you get a chance to read my story “Elephantine”.

Well, I launched a Substack.

It’s called “The Cahill Collection”, and it’s where I’ll be sharing my fiction — previously published pieces, tidbits, and the stories that don’t quite fit anywhere else.

To kick things off, I posted a brand-new holiday story that’s never appeared anywhere before: “Shrimp Ornament.” It’s about family dynamics, questionable décor, and the often insufferable spirit of the holidays.

If you’d like to read it (and follow along as I add more work), the link is in my bio, or you can simply use this link:

Hope you enjoy — and happy holidays. 🎄🦐 by @seanycwrites
