ARTNAUT MEMBER MONDAY
Artnaut, Emily Araújo, inspires with her resilience, tenacity and beauty. After the Eaton Fire swallowed Araújo’s home and studio, an LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund Grant enabled her to restart her practice. In a borrowed studio space, with fresh supplies and a plan to prepare all new work for a solo show, the three pieces featured were part of that exhibition, “The Unknown”, @shoeboxarts.la, in June. Emily explains, “The slippery, uncontrollable nature of water media echoes the subjects I have been investigating since the fire: remembrance, lost objects, smoke, mist and inventing stories of home.” Emily looks forward to expanding her skills at the Anderson Ranch workshop later this month. Emily says, “As I look to the future, I see my experience of loss from an unchecked urban wildfire as bolstering my empathy for others embedded in struggle.” Well done, Emily!

It’s raw. It’s a record of some of my feelings in the month of September and it’s just one painting. I felt a little hesitant to share because I don’t like the idea of it being interpreted as my permanent state of mind. Cause that’s definitely not the case. I’m posting because a friend encouraged me too, and because not everything‘s perfect.

Witness. Gouache, collage, walnut ink and pencil on gessoed panel. 12” x 12”. 2026.
