New paper out this week. 🍄

In psilocybin retreat and community settings, "dose" is usually counted in grams of dried mushroom. But mushrooms aren't standardized two batches of the same species can hold very different amounts of psilocybin.

In a study run during a 7-day retreat in Jamaica, we measured two batches that differed 2.6-fold in potency (6.08 vs 15.7 mg/g) using a rapid, low-cost field test by @miraculixlab Same weight on the scale, very different amount of the active compound.
Accurate measurement is how naturalistic research becomes reproducible and honestly reported. This is about research quality, not dosing advice.

Ive taught in psychedelic certificate programs. Really good ones! with real experiential components. But let´s not confuse them with actual expertise: even those cannot give you all this work actually runs on.

Let me explain with a mountain.

Nobody wise goes hiking in the wild without preparation. Learn to read maps. Learn what to pack, which gadgets to bring, what the weather can do. All of it helps, it would be foolish to skip it.

But none of it gives you the experience of actually walking the mountain.
Ideally, you go first with someone who knows the terrain, can advise you on what boots to bring. Someone who has been in situations no manual described, and had to find solutions on the fly.

That’s the kind of experience gained on the terrain, not in the classroom.

I know this from my other life. In emergency medicine we have excellent simulation rooms, and we keep training in them to stay sharp. Not one of us confuses the sim room with the resuscitation room, and no physician knows how it’s going to be in real life after we get our diploma. I’ve learned at least as much from colleagues that have a lifetime in the field as I learned at the university. Combining that knowledge, is super important!

Here’s what the mountain taught me about expertise:

I’ve met the high-tech guide, well read, maps and GPS in his pocket.
And I’ve met the local who grew up on the mountain and walks it in flip-flops.

Both are experts. What made them experts is the same thing: thousands of hours on the terrain.

Not the fancy gear. Not its absence.

And in our work, the terrain has a second layer.

Because practitioners are made, in great part, by learning themselves on that terrain. What triggers them. What capacity for compassion they actually hold when it’s tested.

You can only offer others what you have learned to offer yourself.
A certificate definitely helps! The maps and GPS help. But maybe... they are not enough.

So I want to ask the practitioners here:

What did you have to learn about yourself before you could hold it for someone else?

Is continuous experiential education necessary for psychedelic practitioners? by @search_md

For people who hold space for others, support is not always easy to find.

That is why we are opening applications for a new retreat format for psychedelic practitioners.

The Practitioners Dyad Retreat is a small reciprocal space for therapists, facilitators, clinicians, guides, and integration professionals working close to altered states.

The format is intentionally simple: 14 participants, 7 dyads, and one fixed partner throughout the retreat.

Each person will have the experience of sitting, and of being sat for.

Could ibogaine be the answer to the current ketamine use disorder crisis?

At ICPR 2026, Sergio Pérez Rosal, MD, Msc. will join Philip von Drechsel and Sonya Faber, PhD to present the first longitudinal case report on severe ketamine use disorder, sustained abstinence, and neuropsychiatric improvement following ibogaine-assisted treatment.

As a single case report, this does not establish broad clinical efficacy. It does, however, contribute carefully documented observations to an area where further controlled research, safety data, and regulated clinical frameworks are needed.

We look forward to presenting this work and meeting colleagues, researchers, and practitioners in Haarlem. by @search_md

All I can seem to focus on right now is this years @icpr_conference 🟣

And… Yes, it is the premier conference on the topic in Europe
Sure, it brings together 100+ interdisciplinary voices in science, therapy, ethics and culture. And I can’t wait to be one of the 1500+ guest. Not to mention the after party!

But the real question in my head is: „will I get a new cup?“

Leave a comment below if you’re going too and want to catch up! 👋🏾

See you in Haarlem!! 💫 taken in Berlin, Germany by @search_md

The Psychedelia Foundation is pleased to support ICPR 2026 as a Silver Sponsor.

The Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research returns to Haarlem, the Netherlands, from 4 to 6 June 2026, bringing together researchers, clinicians, therapists, policymakers and other voices from across the field.

For us, this is an important space for the kind of dialogue we want to support: interdisciplinary, evidence-based, and grounded in responsibility.

More details on our presence in Haarlem will follow soon. by @search_md

Western psychedelic science inherited its language from traditions that were practicing this medicine long before we caught up.

I love the scientific method. I also know it’s complementary to Indigenous wisdom, not a replacement for it.

More humility about culture, and we’d learn so much more.
